When Saturday, October 01, 2022
First Race 2:18pm ACST

Darin Turf Club will host a six-race card on Saturday, October 1. Northern Territory specialist David White brings you his race-by-race betting preview along with free tips and the best odds available. First race is set to commence 2:18pm local time.

Race 1 (2.18pm) – $18,375 Mindil Beach Casino Resort TROBIS Maiden Plate (1100m)

Madame Romanov is one of five in the eight-horse field who will be making her Fannie Bay debut. The 3YO filly has only had two starts in Victoria and is by no means the stand out pick, but starting from the inside gate and lumping just 54.5kg gives her a slight edge. The Halter stable is also in pretty good form. Madame Romanov debuted on Boxing Day last year at Geelong and finished seventh in a two-year-old maiden over 1100m before a last start third over 1000m in a two-year-old maiden at Warracknabeal on May 21. The early market suggests that fellow Victorian debutantes To The Point and Brave Fling could make an impression with the former finishing third in a three-year-old maiden over 1200m at Donald last October. Exgames, who also hails from Victoria, finished sixth in a 1200m maiden in his Darwin debut on September 3. Antonio and Ruby Ruby Ruby have at least experienced life in the Top End without making an impact, while My Monaro from Victoria and Debasement from NSW could pull off a surprise.

Race 2 (2.56pm) – $18,375 Caulfield Cup Day 15th October TROBIS Maiden Plate (1100m)

Truly Brazen is also a close pick in another race for those aged three years and above. The 3YO colt is one of four in the seven-horse field who will be making his NT debut after two starts in Victoria. Truly Brazen finished sixth in a 1200m maiden at Echuca in July before a last start second in a 1217m maiden at Moe on August 28. Kikuyu has also arrived in town from Victoria and is perhaps the biggest threat. A second and a third in 1200m maidens at Mornington late last year was followed by a fourth at Kyneton (1450m), a fourth at Mornington (1200m) and a fifth in July at Geelong (1347m). The Kid finished third over 1170m in his one and only start at Wangaratta on August 20, while Plymouth Rock debuts at Fannie Bay after finishing fifth in his one and only start at Warwick Farm in a 2YO maiden over 1200m in December 2020. Henestrosa has yet to set the world on fire in Darwin, while Watch The Duck was a last start third in a 1200m maiden on September 3. Laylah’s Wish would have to produce something special.

Race 3 (3.37pm) – $23,100 Oktoberfest At The Bay 22nd October Handicap (1100m)

Ideas Man arrived in Darwin in May and made an immediate impact with three wins and a second before finishing 10th behind Syncline in the Palmerston Sprint (1200m) on July 30. The 5YO gelding backed up two days later and finished fourth in the Montgomerie Lightning (1000m) behind Glock on Darwin Cup Day. The former Victorian and South Australian galloper has seemingly bounced back to form. A second behind Cielo D’Oro over 1000m (BM76) on August 27 was followed by an unlucky second behind Mister Monaro over 1200m (BM76) on September 3 after being pipped at the post. Mister Monaro has won three of his past five starts and is capable of going back to back, but Ideas Man bridges the gap by 1.5kg on this occasion. In what should be a pretty decent race the in-form Mr Cashman is aiming for a third straight win. Cielo D’Oro won on his Darwin debut over 1000m (BM76) on August 27 before a last start fourth behind Mister Monaro over 1200m (BM76) three weeks ago. Belmont Day and Illustrating Law have got plenty of toe and if they’re on their game they’re capable of saluting at pretty decent odds.

Race 4 (4.17pm) – $18,375 Melbourne Cup Day 1st November Benchmark 54 Handicap (1300m)

Mr Boomjangles can only be considered as an each-way prospect in an extremely open race. The 7YO gelding had been off his game before winning his last two starts over 1300m (0-58) on August 27 and September 10. Mr Boomjangles, who made it back to back wins in October and December in 2020 before his recent run of success, jumps from a wide gate – but winning form is good form. Prince Ruban finished third behind Mr Boomjangles in late August and looked great en route to victory over 1600m (0-58) on September 3. Brimarvi Rooboy is as honest as they come and was a last start third behind Mr Boomjangles three weeks ago. Nokondi came close to winning last start after holding a commanding lead before being edged out by Mr Boomjangles on September 10. Miroku (62kg) is perhaps the best horse in the race and although he was placed in two races at Fannie Bay in June and July after finishing third at Morphettville in April his recent form has been poor. Afternoon Tea had been racing well before a last start disappointment, while Shenanigan City, Zou Der Zee and Freddy The Eagle cannot be discounted.

Race 4 – #5 Mr Boomjangles (11)

7yo Gelding | T: Tayarn Halter | J: Paul Shiers (59.5kg)

$8.50 with PlayUp

Race 5 (4.57pm) – $20,475 Sylvia The Timex Memorial 0-70 Handicap (1300m)

The Mistral gave the leading bunch a fair start before finishing fifth behind Mr Cashman in his last start over 1200m (0-70) on September 3. With Gary Clarke in his corner the 5YO gelding is capable of striking back after two wins over 1200m (0-58) on July 23 and 1300m (0-62) on Darwin Cup Day on August 1. In his debut appearance in the Top End on July 9 after arriving from NSW, The Mistral finished third behind the handy Expert Witness over 1000m (0-58). Since making the move from Victoria to the NT late last year, Kent Street hasn’t finished outside the top five in eight starts. His only win was on July 23 over 1000m (0-66) and he was a narrow second last start behind Mr Cashman on September 3. Don’t Say It managed a win over 1200m (0-58) and a third over 1100m (0-64) in August, and drops 2.5kg on Saturday. Obligatory is above average and must be respected, especially as he also drops in grade. Don’t Wait returns after producing decent form in WA, while All Stardom and Charretera aren’t out of it.

Race 6 (5.27pm) – $18,375 TAB 0-58 Handicap (1200m)

Bat Pad was blocked for room along the rails approaching the home turn when last he raced on September 10 before storming home to finish a narrow second behind Blueberry Boy over 1200m (Class 2). The 5YO mare is capable of winning her first race in Darwin if she gets a smooth run in transit. Bat Pad hasn’t been that far away since arriving from NSW via Queensland – a third over 1000m (Class 2) on May 28, a second over 1000m (0-58) on June 4 and a third over 1100m (BM54) on September 3. Yowza (60kg) arrived from SA for the Alice Springs Cup Carnival in April and left with two wins and a second under his belt. He made his Fannie Bay debut three weeks ago before producing a withering burst in the home straight to finish a close second behind Cudjerie over 1000m (0-58). It’s uncanny how the last start efforts of Bat Pad and Yowza mirrored each other. Champs D’Or is racing well having been placed six times in his past seven starts. Air Command, Blueant, Zip Lane and Really Swish are definitely each way chances.
