What Darwin Races
Where Darwin Turf Club – Buntine Drive, Fannie Bay NT 0820
When Saturday, May 28, 2022
First Race 1:47pm ACST

Race 1 (1.47pm) – $18,500 bet365 Top Tote Plus 0-64 Handicap (1300m)

Raazou has basically had one failure in six Darwin starts since arriving from Victoria in December with the 4YO gelding backing up after a last start second as a $2.70 favourite against decent 0-64 opposition over 1200m on Anzac Day. A debut win at Fannie Bay at 0-58 level was followed by a seventh and a fourth before a second over 1000m (0-64) in February and a win over 1300m (0-58) in March. Elmore Lad (Kym Hann/Adam Nicholls) hasn’t raced since February, but brings good form to the Top End from Victoria having been placed in his past six starts. Defence Attorney (Tayarn Halter/Paul Shiers) has good form over 1300m, while New Roman (Kerry Petrick/Casey Hunter) is battling to produce his best form.

Race 2 (2.22pm) – $17,500 Adelaide River Cup on June 4 0-58 Handicap (1300m)

Prince Ruban gets the nod in an each-way affair as there is no clear stand out. Victorious at Fannie Bay on Melbourne Cup Day last year and returns to Darwin after three runs in South Australia and Victoria in April and May. The 4YO gelding has respectable form in the Top End, but will have to be at his best to win. Northern Factor (Phil Cole/Wayne Davis) has proven extremely competitive of late – a Class 2 win (1300m) on Anzac Day followed by a second at 0-54 level (1200m) on May 7. Former Victorian galloper Murganella (Gary Clarke/Jarrod Todd) debuts in Darwin, Cowley’s Creek (Nicole Irwin/Vanessa Arnott) has a good record in Darwin, and Ima Puppet (Garry Lefoe Jnr/Casey Hunter) is capable if good enough.

Race 2 – #3 Prince Ruban (1)

Race 3 (3.04pm) – $19,500 bet365 Odds Drift Protect 0-70 Handicap (1200m)

El Magnificence was highly consistent in Victoria, NSW and South Australia before arriving in Darwin, and has done little wrong in four starts at Fannie Bay. A debut win in March followed by two thirds before a narrow last start win at 0-64 level over 1100m on May 7. The 7YO gelding should get a solid test from the returning Pembroke Castle (Mark Nyhan/Sonja Wiseman), who never seems to run a bad race in Darwin having being placed on eight occasions in 15 starts. His last win though was in October (1300m). Valentina Star (Nicole Irwin/Vanessa Arnott) wasn’t far away last Saturday when fourth at 0-76 level (1300m). Gary Clarke’s Tugga War (Jarrod Todd) and Rich Sun (Stan Tsaikos) may find it tough going.

Race 3 – #3 El Magnificence (1)

Race 4 (3.42pm) – $21,000 TAB Three-Year-Old TROBIS 0-64 Handicap (1200m)

Starlite Valley brought good SA form to the Red Centre and delivered during the Alice Springs Cup Carnival. A second and third to kick off her career in Adelaide, the 3YO filly finally saluted in a 1200m maiden at Morphettville on Boxing Day. Far too classy over 1100m (April 23) and 1200m (May 1) at Pioneer Park and will prove hard to beat in her Darwin debut. Super Famous (John Peacock/Adam Nicholls) impressed in Alice before a fifth behind Starlite Valley in that 1200m race, but hit back last week to sink the in-form First Crusade over 1100m. Rojo Boom (Mark Nyhan/Stan Tsaikos), along with Tom Logan’s pair Malibu Edition (Casey Hunter) and Bear Forever (Sonja Wiseman) are the next best.

Best Bet

Race 4 – #1 Starlite Valley (3)

T: Phil Cole | J: Sairyn Fawke

$1.60 with Betfair

Race 5 (4.13pm) – $20,500 Silks Roof Top Sessions 0-76 Handicap (1100m)

Virtually impossible to split the five runners. In what should be a highly competitive race, perhaps it’s Blue Odyssey who will prevail. Hasn’t raced since a debut Darwin win at 0-70 level over 1200m on Australia Day, but the 5YO gelding arrived from Queensland with five wins, four seconds and two thirds from 22 starts. Masterati (Nicole Irwin/Vanessa Arnott) has fantastic Darwin form, but hasn’t raced since December. Bel’s Banner (Gary Clarke/Stan Tsaikos) arrived from Victoria late last year and posted three wins in as many starts before returning to finish second on Anzac Day. Papalet (Gary Clarke/Paul Shiers) and Sebrakate (David Bates/Adam Nicholls) are more than handy, but they too are returning from spells.

Best Bet

Race 5 – #3 Blue Odyssey (3)

$3.30 with Playup

Race 6 (4.55pm) – $17,500 Bridge Toyota Class 2 Handicap (1000m)

New faces to Darwin have excelled of late, so it is certainly worth considering Swing With Junior. The 4YO mare arrives from Victoria and despite not racing since February she might have a slight edge over her rivals. Quoted at $1.80 during the week, Swing With Junior is capable of making it three wins in 17 starts. Kick It Baby (Phil Cole/Wayne Davis) returns from a three month break, but from December-February she had six starts for a win, two seconds, a third and two fourths. Definitely a serious contender. It appears as though Little Miss Rich (David Bates/Paul Shiers), Dream Chance (Chris Pollard/Casey Hunter) and NSW debutante Bat Pad (Mark Nyhan/Sonja Wiseman) are battling it out for third place.

Race 6 – #2 Swing With Junior (2)
