HorseBetting.com.au preview one of the most famous days on the Australian racing calendar, Darwin Cup Day, and bring you their best bet for the feature, as well as best bets and quaddie numbers throughout the afternoon. The track is rated Good and the rail is in the true position, as it was on Saturday for the Palmerston Sprint. The Darwin Cup will round out the 11-race program, with the first of those set to jump at 11:40am AEST.
Darwin Cup Best Bet – Highly Decorated
Nicole Bruggemann’s five-year-old gelding Highly Decorated has hit form at the right time and comes into the Darwin Cup on the back of six-straight wins, including the Adelaide River Cup, the ROANT Gold Cup and the Minister’s Cup. The son of Epaulette has had six starts at Darwin for five wins and a third which will see him perform well on Monday. While this gelding is yet to win beyond 1600m, he has been winning by big margins which suggest he should see out the 2050m of the Darwin Cup. Drawn the inside for Jessie Philpot, Highly Decorated will get every chance to be winning a seventh-straight race.
Best Bet of the Day – Belmont Day
Gary Clarke and Jarrod Todd combine in the fourth with the odds-on favourite, Belmont Day. The son of I Am Invincible is a winner of four from five at Darwin and is two from two over the 1000m at this track. Drawn barrier five for Todd, the gelding will be sent forward and should be able to lead all of the way. Now third-up, the five-year-old should be peaking fitness wise, which is only going to make his winning chances more likely. Niewand is the second favourite in this race, but we would be surprised to see him line up after finishing second in the Palmerstone Sprint on Saturday. Belmont Day is only lightly raced with just seven career starts, so we are happy to be with the consistent galloper.
Best Value – Autocratic
Another from the Clarke stable here is five-year-old gelding, Autocratic. The Wandjina gelding started his career in the Snowden camp, before relocating to Darwin where he won the Darwin Guineas in July last year. The gelding has lost a bit of form since then, finishing seventh and ninth in his two runs this campaign, but they have been up in grade behind the likes of Highly Decorated and Budget King. Jarrod Todd will do the steering here again from barrier 10, which will hopefully see him cross and be positive in the run. The five-year-old has won five from 10 at Darwin, and at the $6 in this race, we are happy to be with him again.
