Two meetings down, six to go in the 2023 Darwin Cup Carnival. It’s Ladies Day at Fannie Bay on Wednesday, with the $50,000 Bridge Toyota Cup (1600m) headlining the six-race program. The girls of the four-legged variety will take centre stage in the Rose Bowl (1300m) for the fillies and mares at 0-70 level. There are plenty of chances in both races to keep punters on their toes.
Still no rain in Darwin since April 27, so with sunny conditions and a top temperature of 33C tipped the 62 acceptors will benefit from a fast dirt surface. The rail will again be in the true position.

Kent Street has had 11 starts in the Top End for two wins and four minor placings, and rarely puts in a poor performance. Was a last start winner over 1100m (0-62) on July 1 – albeit narrowly – and that didn’t necessarily come as a surprise after finishing second behind Hard To Excel over 1100m (BM54) on June 10. The eight-year-old gelding kicked off his career in early 2018 and raced mainly in Tasmania and Victoria before heading to the NT. Late last year, the son of Swinging Bachelor had four starts in Victoria and SA with his best effort a second over 1000m (BM62) at Naracoorte. Kent Street was unplaced over 1200m (0-64) in May and 1000m (0-70) and June back in Darwin before finding form.

This guy appeared at the Alice Springs Cup Carnival in April and from four starts in 22 days the eight-year-old managed a win over 1400m (0-58) before falling just short when finishing half a length behind Mangione over 1600m (0-58). The son of Hinchinbrook has had two starts at Fannie Bay for a second behind Hard To Excel over 1200m (0-58) on July 1 before a last start third behind Zou Der Zee over 1300m (0-58) on July 8. Despite stepping up in grade on Wednesday, the SA galloper is capable of making an impact. A winner of six races from 71 starts, the gelding will also benefit from a 2kg claim.

Tuffnut just missed last start when finishing strongly over 1300m (0-58) when second behind Tyquendo on July 8. The six-year-old gelding has only posted one win from 34 starts in Victoria, NSW, Queensland and NT, but of the other 11 runners in the race only one has tasted success over 1600m and therefore the son of Murtajill cannot be discounted – especially as he will once again carry 55kg with a decent jockey in the saddle. In nine Fannie Bay starts, Tuffnut has only missed the top five on one occasion. His only career win occurred in a 1400m maiden on the Ballarat synthetic in October 2020.
