Horse racing news

There’s been plenty of action in the racing world over the last 24 hours. Let us bring you up to date as we take a look at today’s top stories and racing action.

Nash Rawiller coming back to Melbourne

Not for the first time, two Rawillers will be battling it out in the Victorian jockey ranks in the lead up to Christmas. However, it isn’t Nash and Brad, instead it will be Nash and his son Campbell duking it out over the next month with Brad heading over to Western Australia. Nash and Campbell have only battled it out on one occasion, and it was at Bendigo last year where the veteran hoop got the better of his son. Nash will base himself in Melbourne for the month of December so he can be closer to his family, before setting his sights on the Magic Millions on the Gold Coast in January.

Nothdurft to take a break

The reigning Queensland jockey premier, Baylee Nothdurft, has opted to take at least a month off the racing scene after being rushed to hospital on Saturday due to dehydration. However, with a three-month suspension waiting to be served, he may opt to take the entirety of the summer off. The apprentice is seemingly at a crossroads in his career and is reportedly weighing up whether or not he will return to the saddle at all.

Behemoth eyes off a big autumn campaign

Having taken out the Memsie Stakes and the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes in consecutive starts, it’s hard to imagine connections could want any more from Behemoth in one season. However, the David Jolly-trained gelding looks set for the CF Orr Stakes, Futurity Stakes and All Star Mile in next year’s Autumn Carnival. The South Australian had his colours lowered slightly with his run in The Everest, but punters should expect the Group 1 star to come back as good as ever after a well-deserved break.

All Star Mile date set

The third running of the All Star Mile will be held at Moonee Valley on March 13, the week after a blockbuster card at Flemington for Super Saturday. This year’s running of the All Star Mile was the first meeting behind closed doors due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so Racing Victoria will no doubt want to have a nice crowd for one of the richest turf races over the mile.

Stokes more confident this time around with Brazen Boy

It was hard not to get excited by the trial Brazen Boy put in last month when he won by 14 lengths. He was entered to go around in the two-year-old race at Sandown a fortnight ago but was a late scratching at the barriers, and we were left to wonder what might have been. Trainer Phillip Stokes wasn’t shy in his commentary in the lead up to the event, saying he wasn’t too confident, but this time around he seems to be a touch more positive about Brazen Boy’s prospects. He’s unsure whether the horse is an 800m dasher or a genuine sprinter over 1000m, but it’s a question that will be answered to some extent this Saturday at The Valley.
