2021 CS Hayes Stakes preview – Saturday, February 13

The CS Hayes Stakes is one of the main events on Flemington’s nine-race card on Saturday, and the field of 15 that is set to go around is full of classy runners. The Group 3 race for three-year-old colts and geldings is worth $160,000, with plenty of the key players coming in fresh from a spell or second up.

It looks to be a race where most runners can present a strong case. Aim was somehow at double figures before his scratching on Friday morning, while it is incredible to think that Levin Classic runner-up Brando is not a short-priced favourite. That highlights the amount of depth in this race. The speed looks to come from Grandslam, Brando and last year’s Blue Diamond Stakes winner, Tagaloa.

Mo’unga, now with Annabel Neasham, will return from a spell following a last-start seventh in the Caulfield Guineas. He will get a genuine tempo to suit his get-back-and-run-on style, so it is just a matter of whether he can go with the rock-hard fit Aim over the last 50m. He has three wins from four starts and looks a real danger at the $13 quote.

Last seen competing in the Cox Place following a third-place finish in the Caulfield Guineas, it is hard to imagine that Grandslam is a $34 chance in the CS Hayes Stakes. From the wide gate he can amble across to the front of the field, and with 56kg on his bag he looks to be the best runner at odds outside of our top two picks. There is no reason why he cannot feature in the finish, and at this bloated price we are happy to get involved.
