TRAINER Ben Currie knows he has a potential star on his hands in the form of Crusher, which will make its long-awaited second start after blitzing the field on debut on New Year’s Eve.

The two-year-old daughter of Snitzel hammered the field by six lengths on debut as a $2.10 favourite at Spotsbet.com.au, but has not raced since after being subsequently spelled for five months.

The filly resumes its racing career at the Gold Coast on Wednesday afternoon and trainer Ben Currie is optimistic Crusher can make it two wins from as many starts.

“She’s going good,” Currie told HorseBetting.com.au.

“I’m happy with her prep, she’s had a couple of jump outs and she’s been impressive in those.

“She’s a young filly with plenty of upside.”

The bookmakers share the same lofty opinion of the Snitzel product.

Crusher was installed as the $2.60 favourite at Crownbet.com.au to take out the Langs Building Supplies Handicap at the Gold Coast Racetrack on Wednesday.

The trainer believes a favourable draw, as well as landing a superstar jockey on board will mean Crusher has the best possible chance of maintaining its unbeaten record.

“When I took a look at the barrier draw I was pretty happy, then to engage Jeff (Lloyd), that’s obviously a big help as well.

“So I’m very happy with how everything is going.”

A win on Wednesday would announce the two-year-old as a genuine star of the future, but the racing team is deciding to take everything as it comes.

Currie said the team will target this race, then a metropolitan meeting before assessing what is next for the star in the making.

“We have no great plans for her at this stage,” the trainer said.

“We’re just going to try and knock off this race, then look to a metro race for her because she looks to be an elite filly.”

Despite having no set plans, Currie believes the sprint trip is the ideal distance for Crusher.
“We’ll probably just try and keep her at the 1000m, but we’ll see how we go tomorrow.”

Expectations around racing circles are high given how well Snitzel runners have gone over the current racing season, but the team is not getting ahead of himself.

The sire record speaks for itself but Currie believes it will be Crusher, not the bloodline which will determine exactly how far the filly can progress.

“Being a Snitzel filly she might be worth something so we’ll just get through that,” he said.

“Snitzels are really good and she looks to have shown plenty on debut so we’re just hopeful she goes on in and comes back out with what she

“From then we’ll go from there, we haven’t really got any set plans, we’ll just take it as it goes.”
