Cranbourne’s night racing season kicks off this Friday, and HorseBetting.com.au’s Victorian horse racing analyst presents his best bets and quaddie selections for the nine-race card. The track is rated a Heavy 8, the rail is out 7m for the entire circuit, and the meeting is set to commence at 4:45pm AEDT.
Cranbourne Best Bet – Mahashakti
Mitchell Freedman and Jordan Childs are set to combine with the smart Mahashakti in the Pinker Pinker Plate, and the mare looks hard to beat. She can stay all day, having gone down in the Benalla Cup by only a half-length over 2046m on September 26, and the form behind Starcaster and Bartholomeu Dias in that race looks strong. Look for Jordan Childs to have her smoking the pipe in the second half of the field before making a move from the 600m mark and ultimately proving too hard to run down in the feature event.
Next Best Bet at Cranbourne – Moeen
Stepping back from a competitive Flemington BM70 is the Phillip Stokes-trained Moeen, who looks well placed to make it a winning track debut. The five-year-old Wandjina mare has shown she is much more capable when settling closer to the speed, and with a bit of luck Zac Spain can do just that from barrier six. If Spain can be a little bit positive in the early stages, he has speed drawn outside him and could get a cart across into a nice position. If she does not get trapped three-wide without cover, we expect to see Moeen grind away another victory as she enjoys the drop back into a country-level BM78. She should be raring to go third-up from a spell.
Best Value Bet at Cranbourne – The Awesome Son
Julius Sandhu brings the four-year-old gelding The Awesome Son to the Cranbourne 1600m, where he looks well placed to bounce back from a poor showing at Sandown on August 18. Having settled near last on that day, he could only plug away down the home straight and made little to no impact. His win two starts back came on a Heavy 10 at Moe on August 4, so we know he will handle the going and appreciate the drop in grade back to country level. Look for Craig Newitt to have him settled midfield and then dropping on the front-runners. This one could prove hard to hold out at a very nice price.
