What Cranbourne Races
Where Cranbourne Turf Club – 50 Grant St, Cranbourne VIC 3977
When Friday, January 13, 2023
First Race 6:15pm AEDT

Cranbourne Turf Club will host another eight-race program this Friday night. The track is currently rated a Good 4 and with very warm weather forecast for eastern Victoria on Thursday and Friday, we will most likely be on a firm track come race day. The rail will be in the True position for the entire circuit, when racing commences at 6:15pm AEDT.

Best Bet at Cranbourne: Zoutellus

Our best bet of the night will be the Ken & Kasey Keys-trained Zoutellus who is coming off an easy win at Stony Creek last start over 1600m on December 27. This five-year-old gelding has returned to the race track this preparation very well, finishing in the top four at all three of his starts. This son of Zoustar recorded his second win of his career at his most recent start and he will be looking for back-to-back wins for the first time in his career on Friday night when he takes on the 2025m at Cranbourne for the first time. At his most recent start, this gelding settled in behind a tearaway leader and they put over five lengths on the rest of the field by the home turn, and as the leader started to weaken this guy got stronger and ran away with an easy 5.5 length victory, eased down in the final 100m. From barrier one on Friday, Ben Allen should have this gelding leading or in the box seat and if he sees out the 2025m, he should be winning again.

Next Best at Cranbourne: Dancinginthedark

Michael Kent will have his lightly race four-year-old mare, Dancinginthedark, entering her second race start of her career over 1400m in a Maiden Plate at Cranbourne this Friday night. She is coming off a nice second at this track over 1500m last start, where she had to make her run before the 600m mark to try and catch the leader who had put over eight lengths on her. Considering she was on debut and had to pull the rest of the field along with her to catch the runaway leader, her effort was very good, and Kent and his team would have been more than happy with her. Dropping back to 1400m looks to be a good decision, as she will be much fitter and would have learned a lot from the debut run. If Ethan Brown can push forward to try and hold a prominent position in the first six, we should be seeing this girl find the outside and work home nicely to figure in the finish.

Best Value at Cranbourne: Opalson

In the opening race, we will be taking on the odds-on favourite with online bookmakers, Choquant, with the David & Coral Feek-trained Opalson, who will be second-up after running fourth at Mornington over 1500m on December 2. This four-year-old gelding has only faced the starter twice in his short career, and at his second, and most recent start, he was crowded on the home turn and had to check off heels to make a second run inside the race leader at the 250m mark. Without having to make a second run, we believe that he would have gone close to winning. From barrier 12 Robbie Downey will have to drop to the back of the field, but if he only has to make one run from the 600m mark and gets an ounce of luck, this gelding will be in this race for a long way.

Best Value

Race 1 – Silks#5 Opalson (12)

4yo Gelding | T: David & Coral Feek | J: Robbie Downey (59.5kg)
