Craig Williams will appeal a six-meeting suspension for breaching the whip rules at Caulfield.

Williams was hit with the ban after pleading guilty to using the whip six times more than allowed before the 100m mark in Sunday’s Maree Madden-Melder Handicap (1800m) aboard Stormy Shore who finished midfield.

The champion Melbourne jockey’s ban is due to start immediately and he will be free to return to riding on Saturday.

Williams told stewards he felt his “excellent record” should have saved him from a suspension and said he would be lodging an appeal.

Apprentice Liam Riordan was also hit with a six-meeting suspension for breaching the whip rules in the second race on the card aboard the unplaced Snitzelwood.
