2020 Coongy Cup betting preview

The last spot in this year’s Caulfield Cup is up for grabs on Wednesday for the winner of the Group 3 Coongy Cup over 2000m. Al Galayel heads the market at this stage ahead of Nonconformist and Django Freeman, while the three Group 1 winners in Harlem, Princess Jenni and Cape Of Good Hope fill the next three lines of betting. There isn’t too much speed on paper, with Harlem the likely leader in the race.

Best BetNonconformist (#8) $4.50 with Sportsbet

We are siding with the youngest horse in the race. A winner of three from eight, the four-year-old son of Rebel Raider has only missed the places once in his career. That came at his last start when six deep, so we are happy to put a pen through that run. First up he motored late over 1400m, so we expect he can win now he’s third up and out to 2000m. Jordan Childs takes the ride from gate four and is likely to settle just in behind the speed.

Next BestAl Galayel (#3) $2.50 with Sportsbet

Al Galayel is shooting for his fourth win on the trot, and this looks a race that’s right there for the taking. He outran Orderofthegarter first up before beating home Plein Ciel, Levendi and Mirage Dancer, with the latter going on to win the Metropolitan at his next start, so there’s plenty of good form all around him. The 2000m looks his go, and he is flying at the minute against some older, worse-performing gallopers. Ben Melham sit outside the leaders from barrier nine and look for a strong finish from the favourite.

Best ValueHarlem (#1) $8.50 with Sportsbet

Harlem simply doesn’t like winning, but his form suggests he’ll be in this race up to his ears. A winner of back-to-back Australian Cups, the nine-year-old gelding was right thereabouts in his first three runs this campaign, which were all at Group 1 level, so the drop in class will be beneficial. Mark Zahra hops aboard and will likely take up the running from barrier three. The big weight is a concern, as too is the lack of winning form, but Harlem has the class and should be in it for a long way.
