Connections dreaming big with Malt Time
In a remarkable turn of events, trainers Shaun and Emma Clotworthy have seemingly uncovered Malt Time’s newfound prowess at longer distances.
The seven-year-old mare, typically confined to sprint distances, showcased her versatility in the Group 1 Arrowfield Stud Plate (1600m) at Hastings, finishing as the runner-up behind Mustang Valley.
Reflecting on the decision to test Malt Time over a mile, Shaun Clotworthy expressed the uncertainties they faced.
“We were going into a bit of the unknown with the mile,” said co-trainer Shaun Clotworthy.
We weren’t sure whether she would get a mile because she does tend to travel a little bit keenly.”
However, the mare’s encouraging performance in the Group 1 Tarzino Trophy (1400m) and her ability to handle the challenging track conditions left the trainers elated.
Clotworthy remarked, “We were rapt.”
Pleased with Malt Time’s post-race condition, Clotworthy revealed plans for a well-deserved freshen-up before targeting upcoming stakes races.
“She is going to have a freshen-up and then head to the Auckland Breeders’ race on the 25th (of November) at Pukekohe.
“Long-term, we may look at the Rich Hill Mile (Group 2, 1600m) and the Thoroughbred Breeders’ (Group 1, 1600m) at Te Aroha in the autumn.”
While basking in the success of the weekend, Clotworthy swiftly shifted focus to upcoming races.
Four runners, including the promising Lashana, are set to represent the stable at Tauranga on Wednesday.
Clotworthy is optimistic about Lashana’s chances, saying, “She raced well last time, and I think she will handle the conditions, presuming the track will still be in that heavy range. She should be a good chance.”
Looking ahead, the stable will also have a presence at Woodville’s postponed Thursday meeting with Peanutbutterfalcon and Empire State, the latter pairing up with stable rider Lucas Olsen.
Clotworthy praised Olsen, saying, “Lucas is a pretty good amateur, he has had a couple of rides for a win and a second.”
