Coastwatch Turns Corner At Randwick
Time to mature has helped well bred colt Coastwatch hit the ground running first up with a maiden victory on the Randwick Kensington.
Coastwatch resumed in the Ghaiyyath New To Darley Maiden Handicap (1400m) at Randwick on Wednesday after a maiden prep which delivered mixed results.
Settled midfield, the Fastnet Rock colt produced a sustained run down the Kensington straight and held off a fast finishing Gin Martini for a slender maiden victory.
“It’s amazing how much these two-year-olds can change,” trainer Chris Waller said.
“Last preparation he was very excitable. He was worrying about everything else except being a racehorse. He felt the pinch at his last start (cardiac arrhythmia) and he’s come back as a completely different horse.”
“He is a decent horse. I know he has only won a midweek today but I like the way he did it and obviously first up over 1400m, I think there is a bit of improvement to come.”
A $750,000 yearling purchase, Coastwatch is a half brother to Mighty Boss.
Mighty Boss is best known for winning the 2017 Caulfield Guineas as a +10000 outsider, the longest priced winner of the Caulfield Guineas since Abaridy won the 1986 renewal as at +25000.
Resuming over 1400m at Randwick on Wednesday, Coastwatch’s rider James McDonald feels the two-year-old will also appreciate a mile and beyond.
“He is a beautiful horse and the further he goes, he is a lovely strong horse now and he’ll cope with whatever is put in front of him,” McDonald said.
“It was pretty smooth sailing. He began really well, he’s had his blinkers off and his visors on which was a good move, he was able to see them coming.
“He needs the blinkers just to keep him focused being a Fastnet Rock colt.”
Nominated for the Group 1 Sires Produce at Randwick on April 3, Coastwatch has firmed into +5000 for the event.
