The 2021 Clare Lindop Stakes, formerly the Laelia Stakes, has attracted a strong field of 15 three-year-old fillies for the race worth over $100,000. Raced over the Morphettville mile, a strong Victorian brigade will run in Clare Lindop Stakes, but the classy local Victoria Quay is the $4.20 favourite in a wide open field. Expect the pace to come from one of the outsiders in the field with The Markle Sparkle, Spectacle and Valanetti not too far away in the running.
With respect to the favourite, Victoria Quay, we like what we have seen during this preparation so far from Scream Dream, the Lloyd Kennewell-trained filly. A certainty beaten two starts back at Pakenham, the Shamus Award filly got a deserved win at Pakenham in a BM64 on March 11. Scream Dream steps up to Listed level for the first time in her career, and with Zac Spain flying over to Morphettville to ride the filly, it suggests the stable expects a strong performance. From barrier two, she should get the run of the race just off the leaders’ heels and if she is afforded any luck in the home straight she has the turn of foot to take out the Clare Lindop Stakes, on her way to potentially bigger races during the Adelaide carnival.
Victoria Quay sent tongues wagging with a big win in the Wakeful Stakes during the Melbourne Cup carnival, and showed plenty of talent in her initial campaign. However, her run in the Morphettville Guineas three weeks ago left plenty to be desired, yet her class should have her there or thereabouts when it matters most. Jamie Kah did make it known post race that Victoria Quay will derive benefit from that first up run in the Morphettville Guineas, and would get better over further. Perhaps the $4.20 on offer is a touch short then considering the Dundeel filly remains at 1600m for her second up run. Aided by a strong tempo her sustained turn of foot will have her in the finish, and as long as she does not get trapped wide from barrier 12, she will be fighting out the finish.
One to follow at a nice price is Energy Within from the Dabernig & Hayes stable, who managed to beat home Scream Dream two starts at Pakenham. She was only beaten 1.5 lengths on Soft ground at The Valley, whereas she prefers a firmer surface and that is what the Toranado filly gets here on Saturday. From barrier three, Energy Within should not be too far away in the running, and if she had the ability to beat Scream Dream home two starts back, who is to say a similar result is not possible here?
