Chelmsford Stakes 2020 betting tips, best odds & form guide
The Group 2 Heineken Chelmsford Stakes is one of the standout races on the Randwick card this weekend and sees a number of stars returning. The 15-strong field features a number of quality horses including Avilius, Angel Of Truth, Zebrowski and Nettoyer. These runners head the market at the time of writing, with Mister Sea Wolf the only other in single figures. Given the number of stayers resuming, it doesn’t appear as though it’ll be an overly fast run affair, with Finche and Wu Gok likely to lead.
Randwick racing tips for 2020 Chelmsford Stakes
Avilius @ $4.80 Sportsbet
Avilius’ form stands out given he has won 3 Group 1 races and over $3 million in prizemoney. We had him in our numbers in the Winx Stakes before he was scratched on race morning, and we think he is even better suited here. He’s won twice first up in the past and is a three-time 1600m winner. He ran second in this race last year, clocking the best 800-200m sectional, but was unable to reel in the tearaway leader. He went on to win the George Main at Group 1 level at his next start at this track and trip. He worked superbly with ATC Oaks winner Colette during the week and looks ready to go. Kerrin McEvoy has won on him three times before and should settle towards the rear from the outside alley, which is a slight concern. He is a clear class above these on his day and should be able to overcome the gate and weight.
Angel Of Truth @ $4.80 Sportsbet
We highlighted both Angel Of Truth and Zebrowski in our Saturday racing review a fortnight ago. Angel Of Truth looks to be in this race up to his ears, drawn ideally in barrier three to give Tommy Berry a number of options. Going back 18 months, he led the entire way in the ATC Derby, but he came from a fair way back on his last start and ran on very well, so it looks as though it could be a case of wherever he lands is the way they go with him. In a race with very little speed, we would love to see Berry ping the lids on the gelding and take up the running here with a number of these stayers resuming. Given a number of key chances are drawn poorly, he should be able to get every chance in the run from his soft gate. Like Avilius, he probably wants it a touch wetter, but he must be included based on his last start.
Zebrowski @ $6.50 Sportsbet
Zebrowski’s run in the Winx Stakes was a super return, and we expect him to be even fitter here second up. He’s a winner second up at 1600m in the past, which came last campaign on his way to the Derby. The son of Savabeel is bred to stay, so this should be an ideal stepping stone to the bigger races in the spring. Drawn in barrier 12, he’ll have to get back under Brenton Avdulla, who will sit on him for the first time. The gelding is yet to win at this track in three starts, but he ran second in the ATC Derby at his last run in his previous campaign. This still may be short of his best, but he looks to be a real talent and could finish over the top of them here.
