Chairman’s Handicap betting tips – Saturday, 30 May 2020

Ilwendo horse racing news
Ilwendo looks set to jump as the race favourite in Saturday’s XXXX Chairman’s Handicap at Doomben.

The first of the two Group 3 races at Doomben on Saturday is the $125,000 XXXX Dry Chairman’s Handicap over 2000m. A field of 16 will face the starter in the seventh race on the program at 2:55pm AEST. Ilwendo is the current favourite in what is a very open race. Premier trainer Chris Waller has accepted with six horses in the final field, with one more potential starter should Savacool get up from third emergency. Kubis and Lota Creek Gold look to be the main speed influences, with the race favourite box seating from barrier seven.

Best Bet
Ilwendo @ $4.25 Bet365

We are with Ilwendo here to turn the tables on the second elect in the market, Another Dollar. The pair matched motors down the Randwick straight three weeks ago in the Gosford Gold Cup over the same distance they will run on Saturday. This time, however, Ilwendo meets his main rival 3kg better off. Matthew Smith’s 6yo should get a lovely run from barrier seven, tucked in behind the speed and look to make it two from two over the Doomben 2000m course. Matthew McGillivray is currently booked to ride, but that is likely to change after his fall at the Sunshine Coast on Wednesday evening. Ilwendo is a deserving favourite as he shoots for his first Group victory.

Next Best
Magnufighter @ $11 Sportsbet

Magnufighter goes in for second here coming off a luckless fourth in the Listed Wayne Wilson Handicap a fortnight ago. Gary Duncan’s 5yo gelding gets back to his preferred 2000m trip, which will suit him greatly. Five of his seven career wins have come at Doomben, which ticks the boxes for this assignment. There is a slight question mark over where Jim Byrne will get to in the run from barrier 17; however, with very little speed in the race, we wouldn’t be surprised to see them push forward and find a prominent position off the fence. He will get a race run to suit him at his favourite track and we think he can figure in the finish at around the $11 mark.

Best Value
Shraaoh @ $21 place Sportsbet

One that has to improve second up is the 2019 Sydney Cup winner, Shraaoh. The 7yo hasn’t won since that race last year and is the outsider in the field, but we feel as though he is over the odds and can place with a good run. Master trainer Chris Waller has elected to put blinkers on the gelding for the first time, which could allow the horse to settle better and return to his old form. He has only missed the placings once second up, so we should see improvement from his lacklustre first-up performance. At $21 the place, we have to have something small.
