Caulfield tips for April 3 2021

What 2021 Easter Cup Race Day
Where Caulfield Racecourse – 22 Station St, Caulfield East, VIC, 3145
When Saturday, April 3, 2021
First Race 12:25pm AEDT

A nine race card is set to be run and won at Caulfield on Saturday afternoon as part of the Easter Cup race day. The two marquee events of the day are the Group 3 Easter Cup and the Group 3 Victoria Handicap with both races having capacity fields of 16. The track is rated a Good 4 and with clear skies forecast and the rail out 6m we are set for a highly competitive day of racing at ‘The Heath’. Racing is set to get underway at Caulfield from 12:25pm AEDT.

Race 1- Noel Rundle Handicap

Fontein Diamond was an impressive winner in the Country Mile Series Final at Moonee Valley on March 13. Her win in the final showed she will be more than capable of being competitive in the opening event at Caulfield on Saturday. The Ben Brisbourne-trained Turffontein mare has now strung together consecutive victories for the first time in her career, and having won four of her eight starts this campaign she is flying this preparation despite a couple of mixed results. Expect Patrick Moloney to have Fontein Diamond up on speed from barrier seven and her race fitness will have her right in this the whole way.

Race 2 – Bill Collins Handicap

Despite the Anthony Freedman-trained Agreeable being a $2.70 favourite, we are happy to take on the favourite and side with Melba Storm. The Busuttin & Young-trained filly managed to reel in the smart Outlaws Revenge at Morphettville on March 20 when letting down nicely from the back of the field. Will Price hops on the back of Melba Storm for the first time, and with Price’s 2kg claim the filly gets in well at the weights from barrier three. With a genuine temp expected over the 1400m expect Melba Storm to be charging home down the centre of the track.

Race 3 – Redoute’s Choice Stakes

Debut performances from a two-year-old filly rarely comes more impressively than what Najmaty produced on the Randwick Kensington track on March 10. Having been at the rear of the field when cornering the other day the filly flew down the centre of the track and ended up winning going away from her rivals. The Sydney two-year-olds seemingly are the stronger crop this season and if the Snowden-trained I Am Invincible filly can bring her debut performance to Caulfield she will be too classy for this field.

Race 4 – Bert Bryant Handicap

The Bert Bryant Handicap is one of the harder races to unfold on the Caulfield card on Saturday afternoon. With eight last start winners in the race, there looks to be plenty of value no matter where you look. We were with Ripper Rita at Pakenham on March 18 when the Greg Eurell-trained filly broke her maiden and the way she was strong to the line on that night suggests she will be tough to beat on Saturday. Michael Poy hops on board for the first time and with just 54kg on the fillies we expect her to have a turn of foot that will be hard to match. The likes of Celestial Sol, Captain Spud and Black Penn all have strong claims in what looks to be one of the stronger form races going forward.

Race 5 – Jack Elliott Handicap

If we thought the Bert Bryant Handicap was a tricky race, then the Jack Elliott Handicap is just as hard. With up to eight last time winners set to go around, we have settled on War Correspondent who railed like a greyhound to win at The Valley on March 19 with 57.5kg on his back. Will Price takes the ride for the Time For War gelding’s second run in Victoria and with Price’s 2kg claim and barrier one to boot, the pair look nicely placed at an each-way quote of $10. Expect War Correspondent to settle on the heels of the leaders and be charging home along the rails much the same as he did at Moonee Valley a fortnight ago.

Race 6 – Robert Taranto Handicap

Our best bet of the day comes up in the opening leg of the quaddie in the Robert Taranto Handicap. Off the back of a near six month spell Alfa Oro will adapt a handlebars down approach over the 1000m on Saturday. Having yet to miss the top two in all three of his first up attempts, we are expecting the gelding to make it a seventh win from ten career starts and a third win from four first up runs. In a field that only has one other runner who shows any speed, Alfa Oro should get a quiet time out in front, and as has been the case in a few of his starts throughout his career it is hard to run him down if given a quiet time of it.

Race 7 – Easter Cup

Persan is arguably one of the best success stories the racing industry has seen in Australia over the past 18 months. His win first up from a spell at Moonee Valley was thoroughly impressive when lugging 57.5kg from the rear of the field and winning in fine fashion. Having had four starts at 2000m for three wins we know he relishes the distance and having not finished worse than second at Caulfield in his career we are happy to be with him. From barrier 15 he will need a bit of luck to not get trapped wide, and he will need at his best to keep out the likes of Harlem and Adelaide Cup winner Good Idea.

Race 8 – Victoria Handicap

The Group 3 Victoria Handicap looks to be a race with plenty of value in it. At the moment it is $7 the field with Pretty Brazen the market elect in a wide open field, yet it is the enigma So Si Bon who looks well placed third up from a spell. Having won the Listed VRC March Stakes at Flemington on March 6, we expect the four week freshen up has the So You Think gelding ready to go for his 11th attempt at the Caulfield 1400m. No doubt he will need to be at his best to beat the likes of Mr Quickie, Still A Star and Riddle Me That, but this new and improved version of So Si Bon is the one we want to be with in the third leg of the quaddie.

Selections: 2-1-12-11

Race 9 – Geoff Murphy Handicap

As is the case throughout the day at Caulfield, the final race is one with plenty of chances. The resuming Re Edit for Chris Waller was superb during the spring at Flemington before taking out a BM78 at Moonee Valley on November 28. The Camelot mare will face Caulfield for the first time in her career, and if it is a day where backmarkers are making up ground then it will suit Re Edit to a tee. With Jamie Kah on board for the first time we are expecting Re Edit to had a third win to her five first up runs already, but will need to be at her best to hold out the likes of Shandy, Skyman and Ritratto.

Selections: 10-9-2-3
