What Caulfield Races
Where Caulfield Racecourse – 22 Station St, Caulfield East VIC 3145
When Saturday, May 28, 2022
First Race 11:50am AEST

Caulfield Racecourse will host a nine-race card this Saturday afternoon for Melbourne’s weekend metropolitan meeting. In the past, these types of race days at Caulfield have dished up a genuine leader’s bias, and with the the rail out 11m on a Good 4 surface, we will be basing our best bets around runners who will be close to the speed. The first race is set to jump at 11:50am AEST.

Best Bet at Caulfield: Hosier

The formidable duo of Robert Hickmott and Alana Kelly will reconvene in the eighth at Caulfield, this time with the ever-improving Hosier. The five-year-old gelding returned from a near six-month spell with a dominant victory in a BM78 over 1600m at Sandown on April 18, and we anticipate he will handle the step up in company to BM84 over the mile. Kelly’s 2kg claim will only benefit the Camelot gelding’s chances to lead throughout, bringing the weight down to 59kg. On paper, Hosier looks to be the sole leader in the race, and with a couple of cheap sectionals and favourable track conditions, we just cannot see him getting run down. The $2.80 with online bookmakers looks a steal.

Next Best at Caulfield: Starry Legend

One of our better bets of the day comes up in the opener, where the John Sadler-trained Starry Legend will step out over 1000m. If the theory of being up on speed is going to pay dividends on Saturday, the three-year-old gelding will show that as he is a genuine front-runner. He found the final 50m of a strong BM100 over 1100m a bit too taxing last time out, when the proven quality of Ranting and subsequent Straight Six victor Ocean Beyond finished over the top of him in the shadows of the winning post. From barrier four, Jye McNeil will hunt for the rail and should get it with ease, with next to no early speed drawn underneath the pair. McNeil is one of the best jockeys to have on a leader, and we are finding the $3 on offer with online betting sites too good to pass up.

Best Value at Caulfield: Speed Lover

The Tony & Calvin McEvoy-trained Speed Lover is as honest a three-year-old filly as you could hope for, and we are willing to give her a push at a nice each-way price. The daughter of Street Boss has 5: 1-3-1 record next to her name, showing that she hardly runs a poor race. She was last seen finishing second behind Queman at Morphettville on May 14 but was arguably doing her best work late over the 1000m. On Saturday, she jumps from barrier one with the in-form Alana Kelly on board, and following the apprentice’s 2kg claim, she goes around with just 52kg on her back. This horse appears to have a nice turn of foot, so the $17 with Palmerbet is hard to ignore.
