Caulfield horse betting preview

Group 1 racing is back in Victoria as Caulfield hosts a blockbuster nine-race card headed by the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes on Saturday afternoon. The track is rated a Good 4, but Friday’s forecasted rain means we can expect to be racing on softer going than that. With the rail in the true position throughout, we should see the track race consistently, but as is always the case when rain comes at Caulfield, it will be no disadvantage to be up on speed. The first race is set to jump at 12:40pm AEDT.

Race 1 – The Big Screen Company Handicap (1400m)

The opening event sees Regardsmaree (#7) return to the same track and distance where she won at his last start on January 26. It was far from a pretty watch for favourite backers on that day as the Nick Ryan-trained gelding didn’t settle until the final 600m, when Rhys McLeod asked him for an effort and he produced a dominant turn of foot. With better race manners here, he looks like one of the best bets on the Caulfield card. The danger would come from Mystery Shot (#1), who has five wins from six starts but was disappointing upon resumption at Flemington and will need to lift to beat the favourite.

Race 2 – Neds Blue Diamond Prelude (F) (1100m)

The first of the feature races on Saturday sees a field of 12 go around in the Group 2 Blue Diamond Prelude for the fillies. In a race full of potential stars, the maiden Tayla’s Moment (#3) looks the one to beat after being the best of the rest in the Blue Diamond Preview on Australia Day. She ran out of time to chase down Dosh on Australia Day, but the step up to 1100m looks ideal. Decent Raine (#8) was impressive on debut after doing plenty wrong when travelling three wide with no cover and should appreciate drawing down near the rails.

Selections: 3-8-6-5

Race 3 – Neds Blue Diamond Prelude (C&G) (1100m)

The Blue Diamond Prelude for the boys sees Blue Diamond Preview winner General Beau (#1) go around, but he may not get all his way this time round. The impressive debut win of Jigsaw (#7) was franked by the second-place getter coming out and bolting in his next run at Sandown. Jigsaw maps to get the time of his life up in front, with General Beau the only real threat to the leading position, but from the wide gate expect Michael Walker to control things from barrier to box. General Beau is a classy galloper and will be right in the finish, and Marine One (#6) looks to be well over the odds at $21 after running the fastest last 100m split in the Blue Diamond Preview.

Selections: 7-1-6-2

Race 4 – Hyland Race Colours Autumn Stakes (1400m)

The Group 2 Autumn Stakes sees a field of 10 quality three-year-olds compete in what looks to be a wide-open race with plenty of winning chances. We have settled on the Maher & Eustace-trained Jet Propulsion (#4), who was narrowly beaten by Peltzer before heading for a spell in the spring. If Peltzer was going around in this, you would expect him to be a short odds-on quote despite the quality in the field. Our top elect’s stablemate Amish Boy (#2) ran a massive race in the Magic Millions 3YO Guineas when making up plenty of ground in the home straight to finish second at big odds. We also see the VRC Derby pre-race favourite Young Werther (#3) resume; he will be warming up nicely over the concluding stages and must go in everything.

Selections: 4-2-3-8

Race 5 – Kevin Hayes Stakes (1200m)

It looks like a match race in the Group 3 Kevin Hayes Stakes for the three-year-old fillies when La Mexicana (#1) goes up against Pinkham (#10). With not much separating them in the market, we are going with the race fitness of La Mexicana following her first-up win over the Caulfield 1100m when beating a few handy sprinters. The $3.20 on offer looks to be generous, especially with Pinkham only having one start in a weak maiden, so if that is still on offer come Saturday morning, snap it up. Pinkham, in fairness, did bolt in a trial by seven lengths on January 28, but she meets a classy filly in La Mexicana here. Pinkham will lead the field up, and with La Mexicana smoking the pipe just behind her, it will come down to fitness over the last 100m.

Selections: 1-10-2-5

Race 6 – Clanbrooke TS Carlyon Cup (1600m)

The opening leg of the quaddie is the Group 3 Carlyon Cup, which has attracted a classy field. Grahame Begg looked to have had higher honours planned for Noncomformist (#2) during the spring, but a win in the Coongy Cup is nothing to turn your nose up at. The horse loves Caulfield, having only missed the placings once from six attempts, and looks hard to beat with Jordan Childs in the saddle. If the rain does arrive and the sting is out of the ground Miami Bound (#7) will come right into calculations for this first-up go, with three wins from five runs on rain-affected ground and has won first up in the past. Neufbosc (#1) also has claims following a strong Perth Carnival, but you could almost make a case for all the runners here.

Selections: 2-7-1-6

Race 7 – Lamaro’s Sth Melbourne Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes (1200m)

The class in the Geoffrey Bellmaine Stakes certainly comes from Probabeel (#1), but will the Jamie Richards-trained mare handle the tricks Caulfield can throw up? She won the Epsom Handicap in the spring and arguably has the form to win this with a leg up in the air. Having rough claims in the race is the Greg Eurell-trained Great Duchess (#5), who clearly did not handle the Flemington straight first up behind Fabergino, but she is near bombproof at Caulfield with two wins and two minor placings from four starts at the track, including a win at track and distance. Snapdancer (#6) is a danger as well following a strong performance on Magic Millions Day on the Gold Coast. Sierra Sue (#3) is a massive talent and has superb wet-ground form but is another facing Caulfield for the first time.

Selections: 1-5-6-3

Race 8 – Neds C.F. Orr Stakes (1400m)

The feature event on the Caulfield card in the Group 1 C.F. Orr Stakes. Following the scratching of Fifty Stars, we are left with a field of nine led by the resuming 2020 Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet (#2). The query with Sir Dragonet is whether he can sprint at the level that is required for his first crack at a race under 2000m, but could his class just drag him over the line? Sovereign Award (#9) looks hard to beat having not run outside of the quinella on rain-affected going; he will look to lead from barrier to box at a nice double-figure quote. Respect to classy gallopers like Imaging (#6) and Crosshaven (#10) in what looks to be a cracking edition of the C.F. Orr Stakes.

Selections: 9-10-6-2

Race 9 – Schweppes Rubiton Stakes (1100m)

It looks to be a genuine dartboard job in the Rubiton Stakes to close out the Caulfield card. Virdine (#1) was sent around as a short odds-on favourite in the Australia Stakes at Moonee Valley on January 22 but could do no better than a second-placed finish, so he will be looking to right that wrongs this weekend. Greyworm (#2) comes back to Caulfield following a three-length defeat to Classique Legend in The Shorts before heading for a spell. The consistent form of Sword Of Mercy (#10) and the class of How Womantic (#7) and Garner (#4) are hard to ignore as well.

Selections: 1-2-10-4
