Caulfield Races Betting Preview – Saturday, 2nd January 2021
Nine races are set down for judgement on Saturday afternoon as the second of two metropolitan meetings in Melbourne gets underway in the space of 24 hours of one another. With rain predicted on Friday and throughout race day on Saturday at Caulfield, it’ll be worthwhile keeping wet track form in hand throughout the card. For Caulfield’s first meeting of 2021 the rail is out 3m the entire circuit, we’re set fair for a great day of racing beginning on a Good 4 at this rate.

We have been a big of Housay throughout his short career so far, and we’re hoping the Shea Eden trained gelding can get the job done for us again on Saturday at Caulfield. His last start third at Moonee Valley was a complete forgive run after getting held up at crucial points throughout the home straight and still managed to only go down by just over a length. It’s needless to say with a clearer run at crucial times he would have gone even closer to winning. From barrier eight, Craig Williams will have the option to go forward on the gelding with pace drawn to his outside to give him a cart across. If he is afforded a tiny bit of luck early on he does look hard to beat and a clear best bet at Caulfield on Saturday.

The Mark Ellerton and Simon Zahra trained Sword Of Mercy returned in fine style at Flemington a fortnight ago when proving too strong for a competitive BM78 down the Flemington straight. The mare will have just her second start at Caulfield on Saturday, with her only start prior being a runner up performance back in July when producing the best closing 200m of the meeting. It’s clear she can handle the difficulties that Caulfield possesses, and with a slick turn of foot Jamie Kah will make sure she is up there when the whips are cracking.

Leon and Troy Corstens look to have a handy filly on their hands in Licciardi who was a dominant winner at Mornington last time out when breaking her maiden tag. She won by an ever widening 3.75 lengths on that occasion and has yet to miss the quinella in all three of her career starts. Lachie King may need to do a bit of work early on to get her in a forward position, but if they are afforded a bit of luck we expect her to run a bug race at nice odds in the opening event at Caulfield.
