Flying Award has come up a $5.50 favourite in a wide-open field after going down a whisker to Immortal Love four weeks back. If he doesn’t go around at The Valley on Friday night in the Stutt Stakes, then we are happy to be with Cherry Tortoni here. The joint Derby favourite returned in nice fashion last time out at Flemington when coming home nicely into the placings, although he probably gave the leaders a bit too much of a start in hindsight. He will appreciate the fast tempo expected in this race and should come flying down the outside late alongside the market leaders. He looks a superstar in the making.
It was hard to miss this colt’s eye-catching performance at Bendigo last week, and he looks destined to go on to bigger things this spring. The Mick Price runner will go back from barrier 11 and come charging down the outside late in an attempt to swoop on the leaders. He is two from two and will go close to making it three from three here.
If we’re going with Cherry Tortoni on top, then it is hard to ignore Alcyone. When those two horses last met back in July, the latter kept finding the line to miss by a neck. On his last start before going for a spell, he won quite impressively to book his spot in the Derby when taking out the Byerley Handicap. Looks a nice throw at the stumps with a 1×3 play.
