2020 Carlyon Stakes betting preview
The Listed Carlyon Stakes is the penultimate race on the card at Moonee Valley on Saturday afternoon, and it has attracted a field of 11 to battle it out for the $140,000 prize pool over 1000m. With the likes of Sartorial Splendor and Meteorite engaged, we’re bound to get a high tempo throughout the race.
It’s hard to go past the form of Coruscate, who has won the Testa Rossa Stakes and Caulfield Village Stakes this preparation. Since then, he was far from disgraced in the Group 2 Linlithgow Stakes and last start ran into a handy one in Shamino in the Doveton Stakes at Sandown a fortnight ago. Damien Oliver has been onboard for all four starts this campaign and retains the ride as he looks to steer the Godolphin galloper back into the winner’s stall. With a genuine tempo expected, he’ll look to work his way around the field and have the last look at them late on in the piece.
Seemingly Discreet has been working through the grades nicely since debut and has won on six occasions from 12 starts. This will be the Phillip Stokes mare’s biggest task to date, stepping up to Listed company for the first time in her career, but she looks well placed to play a key role in the race. She maps to take a sit off the speed from barrier five, while her win at Cranbourne last time out suggests she is rock-hard fit.
John Sadler has come out during the week and said he’s more than happy to throw Sartorial Splendor in the deep end to see just how good he actually is. He hung on in the concluding stages over the 955m at The Valley last start and looks set to build on that effort in this. He maps to be one of the horses who set the speed, and Michael Dee will no doubt look to make this a genuine sprint throughout. The four-year-old gelding is yet to run out of the placings over 1000m, and his best might just be good enough here.
