What Canterbury Races
Where Canterbury Park Racecourse – King Street, Canterbury NSW 2193
When Wednesday, May 3, 2023
First Race 12:45pm AEST

Racing heads to Canterbury Park on Wednesday afternoon for a quickfire seven-race program. The track is currently listed as a Heavy 8; however, with some clear weather forecast over the coming days, we’re expecting an upgrade into the Soft range. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit, with racing set to get underway at 12:45pm AEST.

Best Bet: Vomo Island

We’re excited by the return on Vomo Island, who will be looking to secure his maiden victory after a short 74-day spell. He’s had just one career start, at this track and distance on February 27, and may well have won had it not been for an incredible steer by Kerrin McEvoy on Inhibitions. This son of Dundeel seems to have stacks of ability, which was reflected in his latest barrier trial on April 28. Chad Schofield takes the reins, as he did for his first career start, and from barrier three should get a gun run throughout the 1200m journey. He might need some luck again at some stage, but Vomo Island should be finding his first win for Peter & Paul Snowden on Wednesday afternoon.

Next Best: Va Via

We love the placement of Va Via as she returns from a 185-day spell. She’s only had the one win to her name to date; however, she seems to be a victim of circumstance, as she’s been placed in ultra-competitive races in the past. You only need to be looking at some of the stiff competition she’s been racing against in the form of Joyful Fortune, who went on to race in the 2022 Everest, and Troach in the Listed Atlantic Jewel Stakes. Another common factor in these performances has been the wet surfaces hampering her best. She will appreciate getting back on top of the ground, and looks in good order after a nice jump-out at Rosehill on March 27. She may be giving away a fitness edge on some key rivals but has the class to be winning this on resumption, and we get the booking of James McDonald to boot.

Next Best Again: Tradition

Tradition showed enough on his return at Kembla Grange on April 15 and didn’t seem to handle the extremely heavy conditions on that occasion. He was still game enough to cling onto a mid-field finish, but this gelding by Frankel needs some firmer going to find his best and that should be exactly what he gets on Wednesday. The 1550m could still be slightly short of his best trip, but he’s won at this course before, and with a favourable barrier to sit closer in transit, Tradition could prove too good for this group of well-tried gallopers. This guy arguably has the most upside in this field and has competed against some quality opposition – including the likely Queensland Derby favourite, Kovalica, last preparation. Sam Clipperton hops aboard for the first time and will be looking to sneak up the inside before producing this progressive three-year-old late to score his third win for Godolphin.
