What Canterbury Races
Where Canterbury Park Racecourse – King Street, Canterbury NSW 2193
When Friday, February 11, 2022
First Race 6:30pm AEDT

Night racing heads to Canterbury Park on Friday night for a seven-race program under the lights. HorseBetting’s New South Wales racing analyst has studied the form and brings you his free best bets and quaddie numbers, with odds from Australia’s top bookmakers. The track is currently rated a Soft 7, although the weather forecast is clear on Wednesday and Thursday, while storms are predicted on Friday. With the rail in the true position, horses that lead are likely to be at an advantage, as has been the case at most Canterbury meetings of late. Racing gets underway at 6:30pm AEDT, when Chris Waller will saddle up five runners in the 3YO Maiden.

Canterbury Best Bet – Spellcatcher

Spellcatcher was added into our blackbook in Week 1 of The Follow Files after he was run off the track by Moridan at Randwick on January 22. The three-year-old gelding was shooting for a hat-trick in his metropolitan debut, and he arguably deserved to win despite the race favourite, Silent Impact, surging late to clinch it. The son of Extreme Choice now finds himself in a 1200m 3YO Benchmark 64 which is absolutely perfect, while apprentice hoop Reece Jones will take 2kg off the galloper’s back, meaning he carries just 59kg. Silent Impact has since franked the form by running second to Maotai at Randwick on Saturday in a fast-run race, so we are expecting this Spellcatcher to go well. From the inside alley, the Kris Lees-trained gelding can be closer in the run like he was in his two victories, which should make him very hard to beat. This is no doubt a competitive race, but a repeat of his last start should see him prove too good for these.

Next Best at Canterbury – Savoury

In the final race of the night, Bjorn Baker’s gelding Savoury will be looking to record back-to-back wins, following on from a dominant 3.6-length romp at this track and distance on January 28. The five-year-old son of Savabeel had been racing well without threatening in his previous starts, but the Canterbury track clearly held the key, as the galloper justified some good late betting to race away with the prize over 1550m. Baker hasn’t mixed anything up with Savoury, keeping him at 1550m on Friday night as he looks to win his fifth race at Canterbury from just the eight starts there. He will rise 2.5kg in weight to the 61.5kg, and Hugh Bowman replaces Tim Clark, who rides Zoumon for the Waterhouse & Bott stable, but Savoury would have to have lost a leg if 2.5kg is enough to turn around his dominant victory from a fortnight ago. Barrier three allows Bowman to get in a terrific rhythm just off the leaders, which makes this runner hard to stop once again.

Best Value at Canterbury – Perigord

Speaking of horses who love Canterbury, the Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained Perigord is one who does. The six-year-old gelding has had seven starts at the track for three wins and two minor placings, and he comes in on the six-day backup on Friday night after running seventh behind Maotai and Silent Impact at Randwick on Saturday in a Benchmark 78. He ran well on Saturday as a $61 chance, just fading late over 1200m under 60kg. He now goes up ever so slightly in trip to 1250m, which should suit fourth-up, while Tyler Schiller’s 2kg claim means the weight drops to 58kg despite staying in the same grade. From barrier one, Perigord will almost certainly lead this field, which will give him a strong winning chance, as in his most recent victory on July 10, he led all of the way to record a one-length victory at Randwick in this same class. He is at double-figure odds again with Sportsbet, so we will be betting each way.
