Canterbury horse racing preview

Eight quality races have been put together for Canterbury’s metropolitan meeting on Friday night. The track is rated a Good 4, and the rail is out +3m for the entire course. Race 1 jumps at 6:15pm local time.

Best BetRace 8 – Miss Einstein (#3) $5.50 with Sportsbet

Bjorn Baker and Jason Collett combine in the last race of the evening with talented mare Miss Einstein. The five-year-old daughter of Dundeel was a fast-finishing and luckless third-place getter at Newcastle last start on the track’s standalone Saturday meeting in a 1400m Fillies & Mares Benchmark 78. She rises in weight due to her drop in grade, but she is now third up and gets to 1550m – both big ticks, according to her record. She is a ‘get back, run on’ mare, so the wide alley isn’t too much of a concern, and there should be enough pace to give her the chance to work into the race. She oozes class and should be too good for these.

Next BestRace 7 – Phoenix Global (#10) $5 with Sportsbet

Ex-Victorian galloper Phoenix Global comes off a fourth when a beaten favourite at this track and trip in his New South Wales debut a fortnight ago. He looked to just peak on his run 200m from home and so should take great benefit from that. While he goes from a Benchmark 72 to a Benchmark 78, he drops 3.5kg after Tom Sherry’s claim. The gelding will look to control the race from barrier three and should prove hard to beat late. Tommy Berry does hop off to ride Charretera, which may be worth noting, but we hope it’s due to weight relief rather than Berry getting a choice.

Best ValueRace 4 – Harpo Marx (#5) $7 with Sportsbet

Bjorn Baker could be in for a good evening if our tips are on the money. UK import Harpo Marx resumed impressively in his second Australian campaign when fourth at Hawkesbury last start under the big weight. He was very good on the eye, coming from near last to finish under three lengths off the winner. The time backed it up, with the Galileo gelding running the fastest last 800m sectional of the race. He rises to 1900m and drops 4kg, which are both huge advantages, and there looks to be plenty of speed in the race from the likes of Time Raid, Love Shack Baby and Bobby Dee to set it up for Harpo Marx and Rachel King to finish best. He’s a good each-way bet here.
