Canterbury racing preview

Friday night racing returns to Canterbury Park this weekend for the first time this season. The track is rated a Soft 5, with the rail in the true position for the entirety. The first of eight races will jump at 6:15pm local time.

Best BetRace 5 – Lord Olympus (#5) $3.40 with Sportsbet

Mark Newnham and Tom Sherry combine with exciting galloper Lord Olympus in the fifth race on the night. The three-year-old gelding has built an impressive record in just five starts, winning four and running a close second on the other occasion. The 1100m looks ideal, as does the fact that he’s won on soft going in the past and been victorious around this course a month ago. If he doesn’t lead, we expect him to sit just behind race favourite, Najmah, and finish over the top.

Next BestRace 3 – Unamerican (#4) $7 with Sportsbet

Unamerican is shooting for his third straight win as he looks to take the next step in his reasonably short racing career. He’s a winner of three from 11, with all three of those wins coming at the 1900m that he gets here. The soft track is even more of a plus, and Keegan Latham knows the horse well after scoring convincingly on him last start and in his maiden win. Barrier 11 will allow him to cruise over leisurely and sit outside the leader in what should be a muddling tempo. He’s a great each-way bet.

Best ValueRace 1 – Supreme Leader (#8) $11 with Sportsbet

Chris Waller’s Supreme Leader is looking to win his maiden here, and he’s a great price for punters to find out. His first two runs came in Victoria, culminating in a 5.5L defeat by the very smart Crosshaven at The Valley before he moved north. His first-up run was pleasing when third, with that form franked at Hawkesbury on Wednesday by Edmond. Tommy Berry rides and should get him to settle in the middle of the pack. If he brings his best, punters will be off to a great start here at the double-figure quote.
