Canterbury betting tips – Friday, January 29
Eight races will be run and won at Canterbury Park on Friday night. The track is currently a Good 4, the rail is in the true position for the entire circumference of the course, and the first field will face the starter at 5:45pm local time. Here are some of the best bets on offer at Australia’s leading online bookmakers.
Best Bet: Vreneli
The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott team send around their promising gelding Vreneli in what looks a race in two on paper. The son of Wandjina won well on debut at Warwick Farm a fortnight ago before running fifth to Private Eye in a race that has produced five subsequent winners, including himself. Up ever so slightly in trip to 1250m will be of great benefit, and he should get a comfortable run in transit from barrier five under Tim Clark. He can win this.

Next Best: Born A Warrior
Team Hawkes and Tommy Berry combine with Born A Warrior, who showed signs of putting it all together at the conclusion of his last preparation. Leading up to that run, he had placed five times in eight starts without winning and amassed nearly $60,000 in prizemoney, indicating the quality of races he had been competing in. It took a Kembla Grange maiden to break through, but he did that in style to win by nearly four lengths last October. He’s had the benefit of a spell and a trial since and gets the services of Berry, who has never missed the places on him. Barrier nine sees him settle close enough to the speed to prove too strong at the finish.

Best Value: Sing A Love Song
We are watching this colt with a close eye here as he is a dual acceptor over the weekend and live chances in both. If he runs here, he looks a great bet to kick off the program, so we aren’t prepared to let him slip through to the keeper without us telling you. Having had two starts to date, his most recent was a clear eye-catcher when third to Remarque, who looks one of the leading contenders for the Golden Slipper. He missed the kick that day, had the race run to do everything but suit him and he still managed to duck and weave in the straight to get up for third. He goes from 1100m to 1250m, which looks ideal, and he gets Hugh Bowman, who is good with two-year-olds. From barrier one he can muster early, hold a closer position and be too good.
