What Canterbury Races
Where Canterbury Park Racecourse – King St, Canterbury NSW 2193
When Friday, January 28, 2022

HorseBetting’s New South Wales form presents his best bets and quaddie numbers for Friday night’s eight-race card at Canterbury Park, featuring odds from top bookie Sportsbet. The track is rated a Good 4, and the rail is out 6m for the entire course. The field for the first race of the night is set to face the starter at 6pm AEDT.

Best Bet at Canterbury – Solvere

We were very keen on Solvere on Wednesday at Warwick Farm, but Anthony Cummings opted to scratch the three-year-old and save him for Friday night. The son of Rubick has had only two starts, running third on debut before returning a gallant second behind ex-New Zealand galloper Sneaky Shark at this track on January 7. Solvere was heavily backed on that occasion, and although he got an easy enough time of it in front, he just ran into one better, going down by a length with a further 2.5 lengths back to the third horse. Jason Collett takes over from James McDonald, but he did win a trial by six lengths on the gelding prior to his debut, so he knows what he has underneath him. Barrier nine is a slight query, but if he can find the front again, he will take some serious running down.

Best BetRace 2 – Solvere (#1) $3.10 with Sportsbet

Next Best at Canterbury – Able Willie

In what is arguably the most competitive race of the night, we are confident that Able Willie can return to the winner’s stall in his first-up assignment. The three-year-old son of Written Tycoon won very impressively on debut back in September, which saw him go round as a $2.30 favourite in the Listed Crowley Stakes at Randwick in his next start when third behind Mazu. Chris Waller has trialled this gelding twice, and while he hasn’t done anything impressive, he also hasn’t done anything wrong over the 800m journeys. The 1100m looks perfect first-up, while the likes of Conscript, Duchess, Sky Command and the unbeaten Way To The Stars will ensure it is a genuinely run affair, which will hopefully set it up for Hugh Bowman to get this horse into a rhythm and finish over the top of them.

Best BetRace 6 – Able Willie (#2) $2.70 with Sportsbet

Best Value at Canterbury – Knight

A pretty open Benchmark 72 over the 1250m finishes off the night, so we are happy to look around some of those runners at the top end of the market. Formerly trained by Kim Waugh, five-year-old gelding Knight resumes after six months off, and the early market support has increased our opinion of him. The son of Helmet has one win from three first-up runs, while the 1200m is arguably his pet trip. Drawn well in barrier three under Keagan Latham, Knight can find the front and prove extremely hard to run down. Two trials over December and January should have him fit enough to fire fresh, while the big weight of 60.5kg is slightly compensated by the relatively compressed weight-scale in this race. He is a good each-way play in the last.

Best BetRace 8 – Knight (#2) $19 with Sportsbet
