2021 Christmas Classic Horse Betting Preview

The 1200m Listed Christmas Classic is the feature race at Canterbury on Friday night. Athiri will run the favourite ahead of Eleven Eleven and Southern Lad. It’ll be a solid tempo set by Spaceboy, Discharged and Quackerjack, while the likes of Easy Eddie, Athiri and Chat won’t be far away.

Athiri has been dominant this campaign, winning three of her last four, and there is no reason why she won’t go on with the job here. Drawn the inside under Rachel King, she’ll settle two or three pairs back off a hot speed which will set it up for her to finish right over the top. She comes off a 1.5L win over Southern Lad in the Razor Sharp, but does meet the gelding 1.5kg worse at the weights. The Lonhro mare is racing super and is the best horse in the race, so it should be as simple as that.

The market has it pretty spot on in our opinion, with second elect, Eleven Eleven, the main danger. After being brilliant in the Wyong 3&4YO Magic Millions Guineas last start, the Gregory Hickman trained four-year-old looks in for a big campaign, with more Black type on the cards here. Keagan Latham retains the ride and drops 5kg off his last start win which will be a huge advantage. He’ll get back from the outside, but will be running on strongly.

If they don’t overdo it in front, one of the more highly credentialed runners in the race is Mark Newnham’s Quackerjack. Lining up here first-up off a comfortable trial win, the Group 2 winner will be making his own luck in front which could see him reign supreme if it is a tough 1200m race. He’s won three times when fresh, and appreciates sting out of the ground. Josh Parr shouldn’t have to do too much work to get to the front from barrier 5, which will be an enormous bonus given the other leaders have drawn wider. He’s the value in the race.
