The Canonbury Stakes is a Group 3 race for two-year-old colts and geldings, hosted by the Australian Turf Club at Rosehill Gardens.
First contested in 1930 and won by Lightning March, the Canonbury Stakes has a rich history, evolving into a key early-season event for future champions.
Traditionally held closer to the start of the juvenile racing season, the Canonbury Stakes now serves as an important lead-up to the Group 1 Golden Slipper (1200m).
Run over 1100m under Set Weights and Penalties conditions, the Canonbury Stakes offers a lucrative prize pool of $250,000 in 2026.
Initially a Listed race, it gained Group 3 status in 2015, cementing its importance on the Australian racing calendar.
The Canonbury Stakes has been a stepping stone for many notable winners, including legends like Tulloch (1956), Fine And Dandy (1958), and contemporary stars such as Vancouver (2015) and Best Of Bordeaux (2022).
It has also been a milestone race for trainers like Gai Waterhouse, who, in partnership with Adrian Bott, secured her 10th Canonbury Stakes victory in 2024.

Recent runnings of the Canonbury Stakes:
- The Gerald Ryan & Sterling Alexiou-trained Blitzburg ($4.80) claimed a dominant victory in the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes (1100m) at Rosehill, with Tyler Schiller making every post a winner aboard the son of Snitzel in the two-year-old feature. The pair pinged the lids from barrier two and never looked in any danger of fending off his fellow colts and geldings, producing a slashing turn-of-speed to take full advantage of on-speed track conditions. The favoured pair of Burma Star ($2.50) and Tropic ($3.80) both got perfect runs in behind the speed, however, both appeared to be flat-footed when asked for the ultimate effort turning for home. The Annabel Neasham & Rob Archibald-trained first starters, Hillier ($18.00) and Peleus ($15.00), both hit the line well to be potential black bookers for the future, filling out the minor money and putting some value in the exotics with horse racing bookmakers.
- Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott continued their winning ways with their two-year-olds, with Tim Clark guiding Prost ($3.40) to victory in the Group 3 Canonbury Stakes at Rosehill. With several of their juveniles starring in the two-year-old races in the lead up to the Golden Slipper, the Waterhouse & Bott team were confident heading in. The son of Snitzel was returning for his second race preparation after finishing third behind his stablemate Espionage in the Group 3 Breeders Plate in September, 2023. King Of Roseau ($4.60) led the field up to the home corner before Prost took over at the 200m mark and raced to a clear margin, with Fearless running home down the outside into second and the race favourite Traffic Warden ($3.40) battled on for third. An awkward stride after letting down by the runner-up hindered his chances of winning, but nothing really worried the winner as he ran over the line to win by a half-length.
- Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott’s dominance of the Canonbury Stakes continued, with Brett Prebble guiding Red Resistance to a strong win in the group 3 feature. The victory over the odds on favourite Kings Gambit, by just over a length, was setup by a strong start, which saw Prebble guide his charge to the rail. Red Resistance had plenty of support before the race, jumping as the second favourite ($6).
- Kacy Fogden notched up her first Sydney metropolitan win in Saturday’s Group 3 Canonbury Stakes, as Best Of Bordeaux led all of the way in the 1100m event. The two-year-old colt by Snitzel started a $6 chance on debut off the back of a four-length trial win at the Sunshine Coast on January 11. The colt was a $425,000 purchase at the 2021 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling Sales, and looked to be on track to make that back for connections after Saturday’s dominant 4.6-length victory. Ridden by Sam Clipperton, Best Of Bordeaux was quick out of the gates to lead the field of five and was able to sustain the fast speed to win stylishly, stopping the clock at 1:03.91.
- Rachel King admits she was second guessing herself when Zethus dived at favourite Home Affairs in a thrilling finish to the Canonbury Stakes at Rosehill. Less than 24 hours earlier, King had endured a series of near-misses when six of her seven rides at the Canterbury night meeting finished second, three of them in tight finishes. Zethus appeared set to suffer the same fate as Home Affairs shot to a handy lead halfway up the straight but the Godolphin youngster pinned back his ears and nailed him on the line. King need not have worried as Zethus ($6) stuck his neck out when it mattered to win the Canonbury Stakes (1100m) by a half-head over Home Affairs ($2.50) with Sing A Love Song ($13) third.
