Canberra races betting preview – March 8, 2021

Eight races will be run and won at Canberra on Monday, with two features in the Canberra Cup and the Canberra Guineas. The track is rated a Good 4, and the rail is out +3m for the entire course. Race 1 will face the starter at 1:10pm.

Canberra Guineas Tips

Annabel Neasham and Tommy Berry combine with promising Press Statement colt, Equation. The three-year-old has won three of his four career races, and is now shooting for four straight wins in his first attempt at black-type. His only race track defeat came at the hands of Peltzer on debut, so he can be forgiven for that. Coming off a dominant win at Canterbury where he carried 59.5kg over the 1250m journey, he should appreciate dropping back to 56kg on set weights and penalties. Drawn barrier three for Berry, he will be able to box seat and should be too good for these. Never Never River looks the only danger.

Best Bet of the Day

Jason Coyle saddles up Hasty Duchess in her first-run this campaign in a 1200m Class 2. The Hallowed Crown filly has won the one race in dominant fashion at Kembla Grange, before running second by a narrow margin at her subsequent start. She was then put away over the summer and has trialled nicely enough for us to see her winning on Monday. There is a bit of speed drawn low in this, so her wide barrier (11) could end up being advantageous if she can slot in behind the speed under Jess Taylor. This is a nice race for her to kick off in.

Best Value of the Day

Silent Agenda was a 1.8L winner at Canterbury at his latest outing where he defeated Dinado who won at Eagle Farm on Saturday, franking that form. Prior to that, he had run second in three straight races, with the biggest losing margin being 0.2L over 1400m, a distance short of his best. He does drop back to the mile on Monday from 1900m, but the two and a half week freshen up could be just what he needed. Drawn barrier eight in the nine horse field under Regan Bayliss, he should be able to cruise forward and be in a handy enough position to finish off well. There will be the option for Bayliss to push on and make this a genuinely run mile, which will suit him even more.
