Thursday racing tips for Cairns
Thursday afternoon will see eight races run and won at Cairns’ Cannon Park. The track is rated a Soft 5, with showers predicted on the Wednesday prior to race day. The rail will be out +3m for the entire circumference of the course. Race 1 jumps at 1:20pm local time.
Langhro is a bit of a one-trick pony; he likes to make every post a winner and get it all his own way out in front. Since relocating to North Queensland from the South-East corner, he hasn’t been able to dictate races like he would generally like, finishing second in both the Cleveland Bay and Cairns Newmarket. His second placing in the Newmarket saw him under two lengths off The Harrovian, which has since proved to be very good form. Put a pen through his last start; he got too far back for his own good that day, so we are happy to forgive. Ryan Wiggins gets back aboard here, which is a big plus as he likes to lead on his mounts, and they’ve drawn well in barrier five to cross over to the fence and set the pace. He goes great second up, maps to lead on his ear, will like the 1250m and has good Cairns form. He’s a clear standout.

Stephen Massingham and Nathan Day combine in the penultimate race of the day with Ginger Beer, who will be having his second run this time in. The five-year-old son of Denman won his maiden at the Sunshine Coast before moving to the Massingham stable, where he won his first two starts up that way at this track when odds-on. He has failed to win since, but his strong second last start behind the speedy Tabatha Miss suggests he is on his way to getting win number four. Drawn the inside, Day will be able to hold a forward spot, which should make him very hard to catch. Ginger Beer loves the 950m course at Cairns and goes well second up, so he should take some beating.

Ex-Northern Rivers galloper Seriousness has been beaten a total of 32 lengths in just five starts, but his fast-finishing second behind the promising Waterway at this track last time out gave us enough reason to believe he is ready to win. It’ll be his third start in North Queensland and his second go around Cannon Park, which should bring him on for the experience. Last start he was a mile off the second-last horse as they cornered and hit the line better than everything bar the winner, who is no slouch. He rises to the 1400m and faces just five opponents, so he won’t be too far off the leaders. The Waterway form is much better than the rest of his rivals, who all come out of the maiden won by Amelia’s Rainbow.
