Cairns horse racing

We are racing in Far North Queensland on Friday afternoon with eight runs out of Cairns. The track is currently rated a Soft 6, but we can expect an upgrade with warm, dry conditions around on Thursday. The rail will be in the true position throughout the course, and the first race will be off and running at 1:22pm AEST.

Friday racing tips for Cairns

Best Bet
Race 1 – Northern Great

Stefanie Horner’s consistent three-year-old gelding lines up in one of the easiest races of his 13-start career. The son of Sidereus is still a maiden but has been running well in handicaps, including a fifth in the Magic Millions Daintree 3YO Guineas at this track and distance last time out. He also finished second behind the very talented Derulo at the start prior. Drawn in barrier two and with Marnu Potgieter engaged, Northern Great will look to control the lead after QRIC Stewards released a change of tactics on Wednesday, advising that the horse will be ridden more positively should circumstances permit. Potgieter’s 2kg claim will come in very handy as they look to get his maiden victory out of the way.

Next Best
Race 4 – Desert Cowboy

Desert Cowboy is a genuine Cairns 950m horse, having won five from 11 at this course and distance and placed a further four times. His last two starts have seen him run fairly over 1200m and 1250m respectively, which is nearly too far for him. Prior to that he put back-to-back wins together over the 950m here. Drawn in barrier seven for Stephen Wilson, who has ridden him at his past eight starts, he’s likely to settle off the speed and finish strongly down the middle. The big weight is a slight concern, given Oriental Girl has 8kg less and won at course and distance last start, but we hope that class prevails and gets him over the line in front.
