What Cairns Amateurs Carnival – Day 1
Where Cannon Park Racecourse – Mulgrave Rd, Woree QLD 4868
When Friday, September 8, 2023
First Race 12:20pm AEST

The Cairns Amateurs Carnival kicks off with a competitive eight-race card at Cannon Park Racecourse this Friday afternoon. The track is currently rated a Good 4, but with some rain forecast on Friday, the track could soften during the meeting. The rail will be in the true position for the entire circuit, with the opening race set to jump at 12:20pm AEST.

Best Bet at Cairns – Artie’s Lad

The Fred Wieland-trained Artie’s Lad is yet to miss the places in four career starts and is coming off a dominant victory last start at this track and distance. He settled behind the speed on that occasion, and even though he over-raced in the middle stages, he took over early in the home straight and won by just over three lengths. The son of Flying Artie has been given 5kg for that win, as he drops back from Class 4 to Class 2, but given his performances this preparation, the weight shouldn’t trouble this talented galloper.

Best Bet

Race 1 – Silk #3 Artie’s Lad (8)

4yo Gelding | T: Fred Wieland | J: Nathan Thomas (59kg)

+150 with Boombet

Next Best at Cairns – Super Twenty Three

Super Twenty Three appeared to have a maiden victory within his grasp last time out, but he was nabbed on the line by Another Dimension and lost in a photo finish. Since moving to the Stephen Massingham yard, this five-year-old gelding has finished in the places at both starts. This son of I Am Invincible will be third-up and should be at peak fitness on Friday. If Matthew Cartwright can push forward from barrier nine and settle behind the speed, Super Twenty Three should finally break his maiden.

Next Best

Race 3 – Silk #4 Super Twenty Three (9)

5yo Gelding | T: Stephen Massingham | J: Matthew Cartwright (58kg)

Next Best Again at Cairns – Ruby July

After getting no luck from a wide barrier at Townsville last start, the Michael Lee-trained Ruby July will get a much better chance to return to the winner’s circle on Friday. This six-year-old mare was a very good winner two starts back, where she settled close to the speed and won by just under a length over 1000m. This daughter of Bel Esprit has drawn barrier six and should be able to push forward to settle in the one-one position. Gaining the services of Chris Whiteley is another positive, so when you add that to her 100% win rate at the Cannon Park 950m, Ruby July appears to be a great bet.

Next Best Again

Race 6 – Silk #5 Ruby July (6)

6yo Mare | T: Michael Lee | J: Chris Whiteley (55.5kg)

+170 with Palmerbet
