Cairns Newmarket 2020 betting tips & strategy

Cairns horse racing

The $65,000 Babinda Electrics Cairns Newmarket (1400m) is the other feature at the 2020 Cairns Cup meeting on Friday. It sees the return of NQ champ The Harrovian, who is shooting for seven in a row. He is the even-money favourite for the race, with Langhro and Only Wanna Sing the only two other runners in single figures. Langhro will lead the field, with Dalon and Fratellino likely to be on his heels.

Friday racing tips for 2020 Cairns Newmarket

Best Bet
The Harrovian @ $1.75 Sportsbet

The market suggests it’s a race in only three chances, with The Harrovian as the clear top pick. His six consecutive wins include last year’s Townsville Cup, Cairns Cup and Cairns Amateurs Cup, while a Herculean effort last start when carrying 67kg proved just how tough Steve Massingham’s gelding is. He is unbeaten in seven starts at Cairns and has won three times when first up from a break. He’s also won and placed second in his only two starts at 1400m, which is great going considering he gets better the further he goes. For a horse that gave at least 11.5kg to his rivals last start at this track and distance, the 59kg under weight-for-age conditions will make The Harrovian feel like a three-year-old filly in a Cox Plate. Drawn beautifully in barrier four, rider Aiden Holt will position the seven-year-old in a top spot off the speed and finish over the top of them. This could be a sit-and-steer job.

Next Best
Langhro @ $4.40 Sportsbet

Langhro put in an enormous effort at his NQ debut last start, running second in the Cleveland Bay after jumping from the outside alley to sit up and lead the field. He had every right to knock up and get beaten a long way, but he fought on gamely to be beaten only 2L by Deadly Choices. He’s drawn to get a much more economical run on Friday from barrier six, which will allow him to lead and leave enough gas in the tank to fight out the finish. Ryan Wiggins got a feel for the eight-year-old last start and will be hoping to go one better here. This appears a slightly easier race for Langhro than his last, although he does rise 3kg in the weights.

Best Value
Drumbeat’s Choice @ $18 Sportsbet

Only Wanna Sing and Drumbeat’s Choice look the only other winning chances in the race. The former has enjoyed a purple patch with six wins from his last nine runs, including a last-start romping at this track. Prior to that he ran third to the very talented Fanaar and Tuesday Rockhampton winner I Did It Again. He has the runs on the board, but we feel he needs to go to another level again to beat either of our top picks. Drumbeat’s Choice looks massive overs after placing in the Rocky Newmarket, Mackay Newmarket and Cleveland Bay. He was the hard-luck story in the Cleveland after being held up at a crucial stage. He and Langhro crossed the line together, yet some $15 separates them in the market. Brad Pengelly takes the ride from barrier 11, which will see him get back and then charge home in the straight thanks to a hot tempo.
