Broadwayandfourth impresses in Valley win

Broadwayandfourth wins at Moonee Valley.
Trainer Mitchell Freedman has high hopes for Broadwayandfourth, a winner on Cox Plate day.

Trainer Mitchell Freedman wasn’t going to miss the opportunity to watch Winx win a fourth straight Cox Plate at The Valley.

That was despite Freedman a year ago having a runner at Victoria’s second TAB country meeting at St Arnaud that finished third.

Move forward 12 months and Freedman was back at The Valley on Saturday for Cox Plate day, bringing two horses, the first, Broadwayandfourth being successful in the Listed Crockett Stakes.

Providing Ben Melham the second leg of a running double, Broadwayandfourth ($17) scored by a length from Niccovi ($14) with the $1.75 favourite Villami a neck away third.

Freedman holds high hopes for Broadwayandfourth who was lining up for only her third start.

“She’s always shown us good ability but she’s going to be so much better next time around,” Freedman said.

“We’re looking forward to what the future holds with her.”

Freedman said bouts of shin soreness had kept Broadwayandfourth from the track until she made her debut at Geelong in September before breaking through for her maiden win at Ballarat on October 2.

How far the filly progresses this spring will be determined by how the filly recovers from Saturday’s win.

“There’s races there for her but we’ve just been managing her,” Freedman said.

“She’s had a little bit of shin soreness but she’s that tough and it doesn’t seem to worry her.

“She’s got a lot of ability and I wouldn’t rule out a race like the Sangster Stakes in Adelaide for her in the autumn.

“I’d like to give her a break and let her grow and develop a little more and then maybe target a race like that.”
