Brief Rosehill trip pays off for Thompson

Dawn Dawn ridden by Robert Thompson wins race 3 at Rosehill
Dawn Dawn has been guided by veteran jockey Robert Thompson to a two-length victory at Rosehill.

Robert Thompson has got the job done on Dawn Dawn in his only booking at Rosehill, yet the veteran jockey’s work day was far from over.

Thompson was not about the relax after guiding Dawn Dawn off the back of pacesetter Easy Eddie at Rosehill before the filly skipped clear to win the #theraces Handicap (1200m) by two lengths.

“I’ll go home and seeing as it’s a cold day I’ll cut a bit of firewood for the fire tonight and I’ve got some hungry cows to feed. My day’s not finished yet,” he said on Saturday.

Co-trainer Michael Hawkes appreciated Thompson making the effort to travel from Cessnock for a solitary booking.

“Robert didn’t panic. He’s still riding as good as he ever did,” Hawkes said.

“He turned 60 the day after the Scone meeting (last month) and for Robert to be riding as good as what anyone else does around Australia is a great credit to him.”

Thompson was impressed after his first sit on Dawn Dawn ($5.50), who boosted her record to three wins and three placings from seven starts.

“I just needed that little bit of a gap and as soon as she saw it she darted straight through. It was a very strong win,” he said.

Easy Eddie ($10) held on for second while Star Sensation ($15) loomed late to take third, a short half-head further back.

Hawkes forecast a bright future for the three-year-old as she makes her way through the grades over winter.

“She’s going to be good in the spring, and really nice in the autumn,” he said.
