Breeding career beckons for Bonniegirl
A STRING of injuries has ensured the breeding career of the black-type winner Bonniegirl will kick off sooner than expected.
The Darci Brahma mare won five of its 16 starts from the stable of Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman, including the Listed NZB Finance Sprint at Hastings in what has turned out to be her final appearance.
Bonniegirl is owned by Sir Owen Glenn, although the rising six-year-old never got to race for him.
Hunter Valley-based bloodstock manager Geoff Roan said injury railroaded the team’s breeding plans.
“We bought her after she won at Hawke’s Bay,” Roan said.
“She was going to go to Rotorua and then that was abandoned. After that we were going to bring her back here to Australia to breed.
“Murray thought it was worth pressing on with her, but she suffered a hind leg fracture of her cannon bone in trackwork at Cambridge. Fortunately, she’s okay and she’ll be going to Iffraaj this year.”
Bonniegirl was purchased by Baker for $85,000 out Lyndhurst Farm’s New Zealand Bloodstock Select Sale draft at Karaka in 2013.
She is a half-sister to the Group Three Mr Tiz Trophy winner So Wotif, a son of Iffraaj whose brother was bought by Hong Kong interests for $340,000 at the 2015 Ready to Run Sale.
