Group Three Betting Guide
Date: Saturday, October 4, 2025
Location: Randwick Racecourse – Sydney, New South Wales
Prize Money: $250,000
Distance: 1000m

The Breeders’ Plate is a Group 3 race for two-year-old colts and geldings run at Randwick over 1000 metres.

Established in 1906, the Breeders Plate has always been contested over this distance. Initially a Principal Race, the Breeders Plate was promoted to Group 3, demoted to Listed in 1992, and then reinstated as a Group 3 event in 2018.

In 2007, Breeders Plate was postponed due to equine influenza, but resumed in early 2008 as a key Golden Slipper lead-up.

The Breeders’ Plate has produced many future stars, including Golden Slipper winners Eskimo Prince, Baguette, Luskin Star, Pierro, and Capitalist.

Gai Waterhouse has an exceptional record in the Breeders Plate, including filling the trifecta in 2023 and 2024.

Victorian runners have been less common, though Dubious won for Ciaron Maher & David Eustace in 2018.

In 2025, the race’s prize money is $250,000.

2024 Breeders’ Plate result

1stKing Kirk (+700)

Recent runnings of the Breeders’ Plate:

  • The Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott barn trained the first three past the post in the Group 3 Breeders’ Plate (1000m) at Randwick for a second straight year, with King Kirk ($8.00) proving best of the boys in the $250,000 two-year-old feature. The son of Group 1-winning sire Ole Kirk was ridden quietly towards the rear of the field by Rachel King, allowing stable companion North England ($4.60) to scoot along at a genuine tempo throughout the 1000m journey. Tempestuous ($9.00) got the lovely sit in behind the speed and looked to be travelling well under Nash Rawiller, while Tuscany ($2.50) was heavily backed and got every chance mid-field with cover for James McDonald. As is usually the case in a field of unraced two-year-olds, many got the speed wobbles turning for home, with North England the first to be asked the ultimate question by Tim Clark. He responded in kind, putting a couple of lengths on his rivals, however, once King Kirk got to the middle of the course, there was only one horse you wanted to be on as he was going to two to their one in the final furlong.
  • After going down by the barest of margins in the Gimcrack Stakes, Gai Waterhouse & Adrian Bott went one better in the Breeders’ Plate, with Espionage ($8.00) getting the better of the stablemate Straight Charge ($4.80) in a close photo at Randwick. The race favourite with online bookmakers, Scampi ($2.90), led the field up to the home turn, but as soon as the whips began to crack, the Waterhouse & Bott runners claimed the leaders within a few strides. With 200m to go, Blake Shinn and Regan Bayliss settled down to fight out the finish, with Shinn getting the upper hand in the final strides to claim the Group 3 contest in a tight photo. Rounding out the Waterhouse & Bott trifecta was the fast-finishing Prost ($19.00), who burst through a gap late to charge at his stablemates in the final 50m.
  • Peter and Paul Snowden, renowned for their knack with two-year-olds, clinched their third Group 3 Breeders’ Plate (1000m) victory with Empire Of Japan. Starting as the $5.50 third favorite in a competitive field, the colt showcased a remarkable burst of speed to dominate the race. Under jockey James McDonald, he trailed the eight-runner field early from barrier eight. Accelerating past rivals at the 400m mark, Empire Of Japan surged past the $4.60 favorite, Physical Graffiti, and then overhauled Mach Ten to secure victory.
  • Trainer Gary Portelli’s strategy to prepare Sejardan for race day rather than the trials paid off handsomely. After finishing a close second in the official trials prior to his debut, Sejardan showed significant improvement. Despite a brief scare at the gates when he caught a hind leg on the side rail, Sejardan remained composed and professional under Jason Collett. Caught behind runners with 400m to go, Sejardan took time to find clear ground but unleashed a dazzling turn of foot to storm past his rivals, securing a 1.25-length victory over the well-regarded I Am Invincible colts, Zambezi River and Emperor.
  • Shaquero, who prepared for his debut with a trial win at Waller’s Gold Coast base on September 21, made a strong impression when claiming the Group 3 Breeders’ Plate (1000m). Ridden by the in-form James McDonald, Shaquero was driven to the front early and had plenty left in the tank in the straight. He held off the challenge of I Am Invincible colt Construct by 1.25 lengths, with Star Turn colt Astrologer finishing third, the same distance behind.
