2020 BJ McLachlan Stakes betting preview

The Group 3 Magic Millions B.J. McLachlan Stakes for two-year-olds over 1200m is one of the key lead ups into next month’s Gold Coast Magic Millions Classic, and one of the features on Eagle Farm’s nine-race program. Breeder’s Plate winner Shaquero is the current $2.20 favourite ahead of Alpine Edge. There looks to be a bit of speed in the race, with Shaquero, Ghostwriter, Alpine Edge and Subterranean all likely to go forward.

We were keen on Astrologer in the Wyong Magic Millions 10 days ago, and while he only managed fifth, we were happy with his run going forward. The Snowdens elected to scratch out of Sydney in preference for this and have booked the in-form Ryan Maloney for the ride. The son of Star Turn has been crying out for 1200m, which he gets for the first time, and has drawn well in barrier three to land just off the hot speed. Blinkers go on for the first time, which looks a great change of gear for this nice type who has had little luck in both career starts. The big track should suit his bid to turn the tables on Shaquero and win this.

Shaquero was a good winner on debut in the Breeder’s Plate and has since franked that by winning impressively in a trial, so he is probably the one to beat here. Chris Waller scratched the colt from Sydney as well, which is a fair indication that this looks winnable for the son of Shalaa. He’s done nothing wrong to date, but we can’t have him this short given he’s had a fair break between runs and is up to 1200m off a 900m trial.

Alpine Edge was tough on debut in the Listed Phelan Ready Stakes when he led all the way to beat Cochrane and Baby Wong over 1000m. Robbie Fradd stays aboard the son of Better Than Ready and will not doubt look to find the front from barrier seven. He will take improvement from his debut win and should appreciate the 1200m.
