What Birdsville Races
Where Birdsville Racecourse – Adelaide St, Birdsville QLD 4482
When Saturday, September 3, 2022
First Race 12:54pm AEST

HorseBetting’s Queensland racing analyst presents his best bets and quaddie numbers for the iconic Birdsville Cup program on Saturday, September 3. While the country meeting has made headlines for the wrong reasons this week and the weather hasn’t been kind, we’re hopeful that it will still be a success on what is a famous race day. The dirt track is rated Soft, the rail is in the true position for the entire course, and the first race will jump at 12:54pm AEST.

Birdsville Cup Best Bet – Jochberg

With the scratchings of Todd Austin’s runners, eight-year-old gelding Jochberg looks a good thing to continue on his winning ways. The son of Skilled has won 10 of his 48 starts, including in his last four at Roma and St George. Trained by Pat Richardson, this in-form galloper will be mighty hard to stop in the Birdsville Cup after winning by margins of 5.25, 12.25, 0.4 and 8 lengths, respectively. Gary Geran will take bad luck out of the equation from barrier two, letting his mount find the front and give them something to catch.

Birdsville Cup Best Bet

Race 6 – Silk #3 Jochberg (2)

8yo Gelding | T: Pat Richardson | J: Gary Geran (58.5kg)

Best Bet at Birdsville – Caitlin’s Angel

Kym Healy and John Keating combine in the last with a horse who is no stranger to Birdsville. Caitlin’s Angel raced twice at Birdsville at their April meeting, winning on the Sunday and then running second on the Monday. The nine-year-old by Pressday was beaten last start by stablemate Tony’s Reward at Betoota, but that was over 1200m, so we think she can turn the tables over 1400m on Saturday. She will race positively from barrier three and be hard to beat.

Best Bet

Race 7 – Silk #3 Caitlin’s Angel (3)

9yo Mare | T: Kym Healy | J: John Keating (56kg)

$9 with Ladbrokes

Next Best at Birdsville – Tintern Power

We’ve seen some good match races in our time, but there might not be any better than this one between Tintern Power and Kick It Baby in a Benchmark 55 over the mile at Birdsville on Saturday. While there are only two horses in this race, we are with the toppie in Tintern Power, who has to concede 4kg to his opponent. This Rodney Robb-trained five-year-old has been racing well in country New South Wales, winning by four lengths at Nyngan three starts ago. He will lead from the inside alley and should be too good for his sole rival.

Next Best

Race 5 – Silk #1 Tintern Power (1)

5yo Gelding | T: Rodney Robb | J: Jake Pracey-Holmes (60.5kg)

$1.10 with Neds
