Big plans set for Flemington Fling winner Speedeor
DARREN Weir continued his winning run when Speedeor took out the Schweppes #FlemingtonFling on Tuesday and the master trainer has big plans set out for the colt.
The son of Northern Meteor was a well-backed commodity during the week, but punters were put off by the outside track bias and its price ballooned out to $8.10 at William Hill.
As it happened, jockey Luke Nolen brought the colt towards the outside of the track and it was far too speedy for its rivals, beating Biased Witness ($5.30) and Hellbound ($26).
“He has been well prepared by Darren Weir and his team. I’m grateful for the opportunity,” Nolen said.
“The only concern pre-race was the gate. We knew the speed of the race would go outside, but we ended up having a lovely run in the race and he showed his quality at the end.”
Weir also had concerns about drawing along the inside of runners, but Nolen, who rose to fame when riding Black Caviar, knows how to ride the Flemington straight.
“We thought the barrier was a problem, but Luke got the right spot and got to the outside late and he ran through the line really strongly,” Weir said.
Weir was going to line the three-year-old up at Moonee Valley on Friday night, but after drawing poorly, he decided to try his luck on Melbourne Cup Day instead.
“I’m glad he draw bad at Moonee Valley last Friday night because if he had drawn in we would have run him there,” Weir said. “We decided to come here and roll the dice.”
Weir is now planning to send Speedeor to the Magic Millions 3&4YO Classic worth $100,000 before a possible tilt at the Magic Millions.
“He’s a Magic Millions horse,” Weir said. “He’ll go to Ballarat Cup Day now, there’s a three-year-old 1100 metre Millions race there. If he runs well there, in the back of our mind we’ve got the Magic Millions (3YO), but he’s got a long way to go before he gets there.”
