Big Duke impresses again in Melbourne with a quality victory at Moonee Valley

PRODIGIOUSLY talented five-year-old Big Duke made it two wins in a row after overcoming early trouble to salute as the short money favourite at the Valley.

The Darren Weir-trained gelding was caught in the middle of the pack coming into the straight but found a run late in the piece to torch the field and return in $1.90 at Sportsbet.com.au.

The well-supported Cool Chap held on well to return $1.70 at Crownbet.com.au for investors while Hurlsey returned a huge $3.90 at WilliamHill.com.au.

Jockey Ben Allen said he almost cost the horse a win on the Valley track after getting caught in the pocket before the turn.

“I stuffed this one up,” jockey Ben Allen said.

“It just shows how classy this horse is… he picked up well and was super fit at the line.”

Allen said Big Duke still has plenty of improvement left in the tank after the impressive win.

“He’s just getting better each run, he had a top run last start… he’s really hit his straps and he’s really gone good,” he said.

Darren Weir lamented the ride of jockey Ben Allen in the race but said the horse was good enough to overcome the poor ride to record a comfortable win.

“Lucky the horse was good to get Ben out of trouble and it was a good win in the end.” Weir said.
