What Bendigo Races

When Thursday, July 1, 2021
First Race 1pm AEST

Bendigo Jockey Club is scheduled to host an eight-part card on Thursday afternoon, and HorseBetting’s Victorian racing analyst presents his best bets and free quaddie numbers for the meeting. The track is rated a Soft 7 with the rail out 4m for the entire course, and the first field will face the starter at 1pm AEST.

Bendigo Best Bet: Hosier

Robert Hickmott and Ben Melham team up in the opening leg of the Bendigo quaddie with dominant last-start winner Hosier. The Irish import smashed his rivals on his Australian debut by 5.5 lengths in a thoroughly impressive all-the-way win to break his maiden. The four-year-old son of Camelot steps up to the 1600m for his second-up run, and the distance should be no issue for a horse that has run over 2000m back in Ireland. Prior to his transfer to Hickmott’s stable in Australia, Hosier managed to run within four lengths of Tiger Moth, who ran second in the 2020 Melbourne Cup. If he runs anywhere near his best on Thursday, he should be far too good for this Class 1 field.

Next Best at Bendigo: The Lion Inside

The Mick Price-trained The Lion Inside heads to Bendigo following a third-place finish on debut at Geelong on June 6. The three-year-old Savabeel filly settled no better than four wide with no cover on that day and yet loomed up at the 200m mark only to go down by a half-length in the end. From barrier nine on Thursday we expect Mark Zahra to lob her into the one-one, where she can get a tail into the race off the leaders. She showed enough in that first-up run to suggest she should be breaking her maiden on Thursday.

Next BestRace 4 – The Lion Inside (#9) $2.35 with Sportsbet

Bendigo Value Bet: The Ronin Dreams

Lisa Jones sends The Ronin Dreams to Bendigo following a runner-up performance over the Sale 2232m on June 9. Having been ridden more confidently than what he had been in the past, the Eurozone gelding just needed a bit of luck in the home straight in order to break his maiden. He was ultimately held up for a run at the top of the straight, but he managed to stick on for second in what is his best run to date. Billy Egan will look to have this three-year-old settled towards the speed again, and seeing as he has contested tougher maidens than this, there is no reason why The Ronin Dreams cannot be fighting out the finish.

Best ValueRace 2 – The Ronin Dreams (#8) $8.50 with Sportsbet
