First Race 1pm AEST

This Sunday afternoon we head to the Bendigo Jockey Club, where eight races are set to be run and won from 1pm AEST onwards. Every runner should get their chance, with no evident track bias being notable in recent meetings at the venue. With rain forecast in the area in the lead up to race day, we’re set to be racing on the worse side of a Soft 6, with the rail coming out to the 9m mark for the entire circuit. Best Bet at Bendigo – Safe Secret

Having destroyed his rivals when first-up at Echuca on April 10, the Mitchell Freedman-trained Safe Secret clearly looks to be the best bet on the Bendigo card. The three-year-old gelding was forced to race wide with no cover throughout that win, but when asked for an effort in the home straight, he quickened nicely and put his rivals away with disdain. That was just his second career start, almost 12 months to the day to his debut run, so if he can derive natural improvement, you would think he would be equally as hard to beat as he was at Echuca. From barrier two, getting trapped three wide is guaranteed not to happen; the only query is when will he get clear air in the home straight? With a bit of luck, it comes when cornering, and if that is the case, then Safe Secret should be putting a gap on this field. We’re happy to take the $2.20 on offer with online betting sites.

Next Best at Bendigo – Phoenix Global

The Danny O’Brien-trained Phoenix Global will be looking to make it three wins in succession, and with Linda Meech on his back, we expect he will take some running down in the final event of the day. Despite taking a sit off the speed in his win at Geelong on April 1, we expect the All Too Hard gelding to be the one dictating the speed throughout, and with arguably the best front-running jockey in the country on board, he should be too well rated out in front. The $3.10 with online bookmakers looks a perfect price to load into and round out the weekend on a winning note.

Best Value at Bendigo – Penciled

Having not been beaten too far at Terang when resuming from a spell, the Peter & Paul Snowden-trained Penciled looks to present great value over 1400m. Having settled outside the leader on that day, the Written Tycoon gelding loomed up as if he was the winner on the home turn, but ultimately ran in to one better. He was first-up after 10 months off the track, and with natural improvement he should take some beating on Sunday. From barrier eight, we expect Jarrod Fry to be positive early and have the chestnut gelding dictating terms out in front. He looks to be the natural leader on paper and should prove hard to run down.
