What Belmont Races
Where Belmont Park Racecourse – Saintly Entrance, Burswood WA 6100
When Saturday, August 20, 2022
First Race 12:33pm AWST

HorseBetting’s Western Australian racing analyst presents his best bets and quaddie selections for Saturday’s nine-race program at Belmont. The track is rated a Heavy 9 and the rail is out 6m for the entire course. The first of nine races is set to jump at 12:33pm AWST.

Best Bet at Belmont – Advanced

There might not be much of a price around for Advanced, but his racing form and recent trial suggest he will be hard to beat first-up on Saturday. The Michael Grantham-trained four-year-old has only raced six times, but he already has two wins and a second to his name, with both victories coming on Soft tracks, so the Heavy 9 will be to his liking. Drawn the inside alley, the son of Playing God will be ridden positively by Patrick Carbery, while the light weight will help him skip through the ground. He’s a horse going places.

Best Bet

Race 7 – Silk #8 Advanced (1)

4yo Gelding | T: Michael Grantham | J: Patrick Carbery (55kg)

$2.10 with Palmerbet

Next Best at Belmont – Mood Swings

Six-year-old gelding Mood Swings looks well suited to bounce back on Saturday when he lines up in his third run for the preparation. The son of War Chant was racing really well earlier in the year, finishing his autumn campaign with two wins and a second to Group performer Buzzoom. After going down narrowly first-up over this course and distance, trainer George Dupre sent him around on a Heavy 9 over the Belmont 1200m and he was beaten seven lengths. While the Heavy 9 is a concern again, he shouldn’t have to do too much work early from barrier four in order to be in a prominent spot and give the race a shake.

Next Best

Race 3 – Silk #1 Mood Swings (4)

6yo Gelding | T: George Dupre | J: Keshaw Dhurun (a2)(60kg)

$3.60 with Bet365

Best Value at Belmont – Union Jack

You won’t see many early three-year-olds going around with as many runs as what Union Jack has had, but when you race as well as he has been, you can’t blame connections for racing him often. From his 11 starts, the son of Patronize has won just the one race, but he has been in the minor money on four other occasions. From those four placings, he’s been beaten by some smart ones, including Baby Paris and Paddy’s Lad, while the likes of Amelia’s Jewel and Aztec Ruler have beaten him home in other races. After breaking his maiden two starts ago in a real dogfight with Sunplay, Union Jack had to fight hard in his most recent outing too, with this photo finish going against him. He’s fit, he’s tough and he’s battle-hardened, so we expect him to run a big race at the goods odds on offer with online bookmakers.

Best Value

Race 1 – Silk #5 Union Jack (3)

3yo Gelding | T: Paul Jordan | J: Craig Staples (56kg)

$12 with Neds
