Beaudesert racing tips – January 26, 2021

Beaudesert plays host to seven races on Australia Day. The track is currently a Soft 5, with the rail out +2m from the 600m to the 250m and then true for the remainder. Race 1 is set to jump at 1:50pm AEST.

Best bet: Boom Spender

Punters will not have to look too far for the best of the day here as Boom Spender is the first horse in the race book. The three-year-old gelding won first up at Doomben when heavily backed to defeat seven opponents, coming from near last to win despite an apparent leader’s track bias. He has since placed in Benchmark 70 grade at Eagle Farm, so the drop in class and the lack of depth in the field should see him blow this lot away. Mark Du Plessis is there for just two rides and this looks the clear standout. He’ll be bolting in.

Next best: Cleo’s Poet

Terry Butts will send down his in-form gelding Cleo’s Poet for a crack at the 1650m Benchmark 60 Handicap. After winning his last two at Townsville, the front-running six-year-old will be very hard to catch in the straight, especially given his ability to spread fields out and rail like a greyhound into the straight. Ryan Wiggins takes the ride and is a great front-running rider, which is an added bonus. Cleo’s Poet finds himself up ever so slightly in grade and will carry 1kg more than his last-start victory, which isn’t too much of a disadvantage. It’s a long way to go from Townsville to Beaudesert, so we suspect he means business.

Best value: Aonach Mor

We declared this runner as a living, breathing certainty first up this campaign at Gatton and were left with egg on our faces as the heavily backed favourite could only hang on for fourth. He has been back to the races four times since, winning at the Gold Coast and finishing down the track at Doomben behind the likes of Bleu Zebra and Azzareach, which is good form for a race like this. Kyle Wilson-Taylor is riding seriously well, so we are happy to back the young apprentice in again. From gate five, he will take the Barry Lockwood-trained gelding straight to the front and be hard to catch with the addition of blinkers for the first time. He’s an each-way price in an average field.

Best ValueRace 3 – Aonach Mor (#6) $7.50 with Sportsbet
