What Ballina Races
Where Ballina Jockey Club – 38 Racecourse Road , Ballina
When Tuesday, March 21, 2023
First Race 2:10pm AEDT

Country racing heads to Ballina on Tuesday afternoon for a competitive seven-race program set for decision. The rail is in the true position the entire circuit for the meeting and with a Good 4 expected it should be a nice day for racegoers. Although, with some showers predicted for the late afternoon, we could see a track downgrade for the quaddie legs if the rain does come. The first race is set to get underway at 2:10pm AEDT.

Best Best: Tiva Bay

We’re confident in making Tiva Bay one of the better bets on the program at Ballina on Tuesday afternoon. He’s well into his preparation now and despite having just the one win to his name across 13 starts, his six minor placings indicate he’s a consistent type while running into some formidable opposition. You only need to look three starts back when he was beaten by a subsequent city winner in the form of Tavi Time. He was then unfortunate to go down in a grandstand finish at Gosford on February 18, when he and Global Encounter cleared out on their rivals. He’s been on the Gold Coast Poly at his latest start, and he was strong running another second; however, we feel he’s more suited to the turf. Barrier three looks ideal for jockey Michael Cahill to get a perfect stalking position, and if he does, he’s the one to bet for us.

Next Best: Inquest

Inquest showed enough on debut at the Sunshine Coast on March 5, and we think can improve to breaking his maiden status on Tuesday. This Domesday gelding showed good tactical early speed on that occasion before fitness told late, seeing Inquest finish into third. That was over the 1400m and now stepping back in trip to the 1300m, we think it can be a massive advantage for our on top selection. Tegan Harrison takes the reins this time and we think she’ll be adopting similar tactics to what happened last time, pinging the lids to come across and lead on this three-year-old. Now with race experience under the belt, Inquest can now be making every post a winner in what looks moderate maiden company on paper.

Best Value: Great Iam

We’ll be hoping Leopardi heads to Coffs Harbour on the Monday prior to this meeting, as we’ve got him as a best bet there. If he does, it leaves this second leg of the quaddie a wide-open affair at Ballina and we’re willing to be taking a risk with Great Iam, who sees race-day conditions for the first time in 770-days. This now six-year-old has only had four career starts down in Victoria before switching to the Dwayne Schmidt stable, and although his form isn’t anything that jumps off the page, we feel there’s been plenty of work going into this son of Mulaazem. His one official jump out was at Grafton on March 5, seeing him jump evenly and sit under a hold throughout the 940m journey. It wasn’t the flashiest piece of work but was a good indication he’s back on track for this first-up assignment. We concede he’s an unknown in some regard; however, at the big odds with online bookmakers we’re happy to take a risk and be with him on the each-way basis.
