Ballina Tips

What Ballina Races
Where Ballina Jockey Club – 38 Racecourse Road , Ballina
When Monday, December 4, 2023
First Race 2:05pm AEDT

NSW country racing heads to Ballina on Monday afternoon, with an ultra-competitive seven-race program set for decision. There’s a massive contingent of 105 acceptances across the card as the opening race gets underway at 2:05pm local time. The rail will sit in the true position, and with drying conditions forecast across the weekend, the track should only improve from the Soft 7 listed at the time of writing.

Best Bet at Ballina: Scud

Scud hasn’t run a bad race since resuming in the middle of September, with the daughter of Smart Missile only missing the frame once in five starts. That came at her latest effort at Grafton on November 16, where the three-year-old had no luck after missing the start, forced to take inside runs that simply never emerged. She’s much more suited to pinging the lids to lead, and from barrier three, that’s exactly what we expect Matthew Palmer will do in the opener. If Scud can cross them softly enough, she should be in the finish.

Best Bet

Race 1 – silks#8 Scud (3)

3yo Filly | T: Paul Shailer | J: Matthew Palmer (57.5kg)

Next Best at Ballina: Rock Composer

Matthew Dunn sends Rock Composer to the races for the first time on Monday afternoon, and based on what he’s done at the trials, he warrants respect. The three-year-old gelding scored in his first jump-out at Grafton on October 31 before stepping out again at this course on November 17, cruising through the wire under his own steam on both occasions. He appears to have upside heading into his first-career start, and although we may be a run or two early, online bookmakers have installed Rock Composer at a backable price on debut.

Next Best

Race 2 – silks#7 Rock Composer (10)

3yo Gelding | T: Matthew Dunn | J: Matthew McGuren (57.5kg)

Best Value at Ballina: True Fairy

True Fairy is worthy of an each-way ticket in the first leg of the quaddie, as the daughter of Real Steel makes her debut for the Daiki Chujo barn. She’s only had one official jump-out since returning from a spell in July, with the three-year-old filly going on to salute at Grafton in a soft piece of work. She’s drawn awkwardly in barrier 14, but we expect Noriyuki Masuda to take True Fairy back towards the rear of the field and unleashing down the centre of the course when the race goes on.

Best Value

Race 4 – silks#9 True Fairy (14)

3yo Filly | T: Daiki Chujo | J: Noriyuki Masuda (56kg)

+1100 with Playup
