What Ballarat Jumps Races
Where Ballarat Turf Club – 240 Kennedys Road, Miners Rest VIC 3352
When Sunday, August 29, 2021
First Race 1pm AEST

The Ballarat Turf Club is scheduled to hose a six-race jumps card on Sunday afternoon and Horsebetting’s Victorian horse racing form analyst present his best bets, top odds and free quaddie numbers. The track is rated a Soft 7, with the in the true position throughout with the meeting commencing at 1pm AEST.

Grand National Chase Top Tip: Social Element

The feature event of the day is the Grand National Chase, and the star of the jumping season Social Element is a deserved favourite in the concluding race of the season and is a clear top tip in the race. Following his win in the Crisp Steeplechase on August 1, jockey Tom Ryan revealed he still had plenty left in the tank even though he smashed his rivals by eight-lengths in one of the most dominant feature event wins you will see over the jumps. He is low flying having won his last four races and despite needing to lug 69kg he should be simply too good for his rivals once and with an improving track expected on Sunday firmer ground will only benefit his chances.

JJ Houlahan Hurdle Top Tip: Norway

It would not be a jumps day without Ciaron Maher and David Eustace training a winner and we anticipate Norway will be too classy for his rivals in the JJ Houlahan hurdle. Forget he went around at Sandown last time out on August 1 in the Grand National Hurdle and focus on his two wins over the sticks at Warrnambool and Pakenham this campaign. His win two starts back in the Brendan Drechsler Hurdle at Pakenham on July 18 suggests he will be hard to beat once more as he drops back to the 3250m. Steven Pateman takes the ride instead of being aboard Saunter Boy and in a race with horses on the way up in the jumping caper, we expect Norway will be too hard to run down in a front running display.

Ballarat Best Bet: Mount Stewart

Our best bet on the Ballarat card comes early in race two, when the Simon Ryan-trained Mount Stewart is set to make his debut over the jumps and looks well placed following a gritty win at Coleraine on August 5. Despite this being his first crack over the jumps on race day, the son of Califet had two trials at Warrnambool over the sticks prior to that win at Coleraine winning in smart fashion in both of them. Braidon Small was the jockey in those trials and jumps back aboard here on Sunday and with a clean jumping display, Mount Stewart should be simply too good on the flat for his rivals on jumps debut.
